OUTLINE

Outline
- tool used to organize written ideas about a topic or thesis into logical order
- “blueprint” or “plan” for your paper

Components of An Outline
• Paper Title
• Thesis Statement
• Major Points/arguments - in Roman Numerals (I, II, III, etc.)
• Support for major points - in Capital Letters (A, B, C, etc.)

Alphanumeric Outline - outline that uses letters and numbers


- Roman Numerals - represents main ideas to be covered in the paper in the order they will be
presented
- Uppercase Letters - represents subtopics within main ideas
- Arabic Numbers - represents details within subtopics
- Lowercase Letters - represents details within subdivision

Types of Outlines:
• Phrase Outline - topic & subtopics are written as phrases
• Sentence Outline - outline is written in sentences
• Topical Outline - according to topic/question each subtopic is trying to answer

* Keep in mind that the Roman numerals and alphabetical notes in


outlines represent the order of the paragraph in the essay
(ex. I. means 1st paragraph, and so on)
* The arrangement of the topics/paragraphs in the outline must be
written EXACTLY as the finished essay.
