ERIKSON Trust/Mistrust: Birth-1yr.

Basic needs need to be met, infant comforted, stable caregiver, if not occurring infant at risk Autonomy/Shame & Doubt: 1-3yrs Want to do things for themselves. Working to master physical things (toileting, walking, muscle coordination). Parents need to know child needs to do these things themselves. Shame and doubt occur if child feels selfconscious and not able to control any of their situations. Initiative/Guilt: 3-6yrs Explore world around them, using all of senses, constant discovery, finding a place in their family. Moving out of self focus. Need to learn to pursue initiative without tramping on rights of others. More interaction with things around them. Industry/Inferiority: 6-12yrs Achievement/accomplishment very important. Undertake tasks and carrying them through. Become parts of teams and groups. Important to be encouraged in these endeavors, if NOT, they are left with feelings of inadequacy and inferiority. Identity vs. Role Confusion: 12-20yrs Very emotional and physical time, fitting in is very important to group, roles changing, want to fit in with peers. Move even farther out, leave family cocoon into world. What peers think becomes far more important than parents. At the end of the stage should be in position where thinking about careers and what they are going to do. Broad area with lots of change involved. Issues with client disease-don t allow them to fit in, nurse needs good understanding of this to assist patient. (EX-teen with diabetes, certain things to eat, lack of compliance, acting like normal teens). Intimacy vs. Isolation: 20-35yrs Forming intense and lasting relationships with another, have commitment, begin families, share identity with another person without fear of losing identity. Unable to master-become promiscuous, may try to interact with others without forming lasting attachments. Important to develop relationship and attachment with significant others. Generativity vs. Stagnation: 35-65yrs Individual has created personal attachments-job/careers/families and now start to think about what they can leave the generation them behind them with. Realize they have sense of community and want to give back. If unable to achieve, may seem self-centered (adolescent like). Integrity vs. Despair: 65+ yrs Progressing toward end of life, task addressed: feeling that life was meaningful vs. made no contribution. Positive outcome-can be consultant for those younger. Negative outcome-dear death/disdainful/bitter.
