The baobab tree, commonly known as the upside-down tree or the Tree of Life is a plant found in the Adansonia genus. There are only eight species in the whole world belonging to this genus. Seven of the eight species can be found in Madagascar or has been transplanted to other places, such as Australia, but only one species, the digitata species, grows throughout the continent of Africa. PhytoTerra Organic Baobab Oil, offered from Arch Personal Care Products, comes from the Adansonia digitata trees growing around the Limpopo River Valley in South Africa, more specifically, the Vendaland Region. The Vendaland is a forgotten part of South Africa. There is little to no development in this region because their land is not ideal for agriculture. The BaVenda ethnic group has been living here for hundreds of years. They are one of the nine ethnic groups living in South Africa, and represent a high number of unemployed women who are left to take care of the children and the elderly. For the BaVenda, the baobab literally is the Tree of Life. They have been living alongside these trees for hundreds of years. They harvest small quantities of bark to make rope. They utilize baobab fruits and leaves to eat as salad. It is even used as medicine; as a supplement to aid in diarrhea, dysentery and malnutrition. The seed oil is used to treat inflamed gums and various skin diseases. If the baobab tree dies, it is hollowed out and what remains serve as raw materials to help make shelter.

Sarah Venter is an ecologist who understands the importance of the baobab trees. She grew up in this region and speaks their native language, TshiVenda, fluently. She is very passionate about the local people and their well-being which prompted her to start a nonprofit organization in 2004 focusing on the conservation of habitats by engaging the local communities. Sarahs company, EcoProducts, is a small business that involves local people in the sustainable harvesting and collection of baobab fruits to make our PhytoTerra Organic Baobab Oil. Arch Personal Care Products has formed an alliance with EcoProducts. This alliance has helped provide over 500 women in the BaVenda community a secured livelihood. It is an important source of income that does not interfere with their daily lives as housewives, backed with the assurance of having Arch as a stable partner.

Oil Stability Index (OSI)

The OSI (Oil Stability Index) is used to measure the stability of fats and oils. A stream of purified air is passed through the oil sample while maintaining a set temperature (110C). The effluent air from the sample is bubbled through a tube containing de-ionized water. A computer with the aid of a conductivity probe monitors the conductivity of the water. The OSI is defined as the point of maximum change in the rate of oxidation.

Data and Results

In a study run by an independent lab, Archs PhytoTerra Organic Baobab Oil was compared to olive oil and evening primrose oil. PhytoTerra Organic Baobab Oil outperformed the other test oils in the stability study showing the slowest rate of oxidation.
