Learning Objectives (not more than 3)
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Students will be able to identify angles on a straight line.
Students will be able to calculate the measure of an angle on a straight line given the measure of another angle
Time Lesson Development Resources Materials Used
3mins Introduction
Begin by asking students to recall what they know about angles.
Use real-world examples to illustrate the concept of angles (e.g., corners of a room, hands of a clock).
Introduce the concept of a straight line and ask students to identify straight lines in their surroundings
20mins Main Teaching Activity 1 Board, chalk, copy, ruler, pencil,
Exploration protector
Divide the class into small groups.
Tell students to take out protractor, ruler, and their copies.
TEACHER ALSO DRAW ON BOARD BELOW STEPS
Instruct students to draw a straight line on their paper.
Ask them to measure and record the length of the line.
Next, have them draw a line segment from one end of the straight line to a point on the line.
Using their protractor, have them measure and record the angles formed by the line segment and the straight line.
Repeat this process with different line segments on the same straight line.
The angles are given in the appendix section (teacher draw on the board and students copy this in their copies)
Discussion
Gather the class together and discuss their findings.
Ask students to share their measurements and observations.
Guide students to notice a pattern in the angles formed by the line segments and the straight line.
Ask students Angle A measures 75 degrees. Angle B is on a straight line with Angle A. Find: The measure of Angle B.
Without using a protractor, what is the measure of angle b? How do you know
Give students time to think and discuss in their groups then
Introduce the concept that angles on a straight line add up to 180 degrees.
Angle A+ Angle B= 180 degree
75 degree + Angle B= 180 Degree
Angle B=180 DEGREE- 75 DEGREE
Angle B= 105 DEGREE
10mins Guided Practice Board, chalk copy
Provide students with practice problems involving angles on a straight line.
Use a variety of problem types, including:
o Given the measure of one angle, find the measure of the other angle.
o Solve word problems involving angles on a straight line.
Guided Practice Questions (solve from both ways)
Given: Angle G measures 115 degrees. Angle H is on a straight line with Angle G. Find: The measure of Angle H.
Given: Angle I measure 80 degrees. Angle J is on a straight line with Angle I. Find: The measure of Angle J
Given: Angle A measures 50 degrees, Angle B measures 70 degrees, and Angle C is on a straight line with Angle A and
Angle B. Find: The measure of Angle C.
Given: Angle D measures 85 degrees, Angle E measures 45 degrees, and Angle F is on a straight line with Angle D and
Angle E. Find: The measure of Angle F.
5mins Independent Practice copy
Assign students individual practice problems to reinforce their understanding.
Independent practice question (solve from both ways)
Given: Angle C measures 120 degrees. Angle D is on a straight line with Angle C. Find: The measure of Angle D.
Given: Angle E measures 40 degrees. Angle F is on a straight line with Angle E. Find: The measure of Angle F.
Given: Angle G measures 100 degrees, Angle H measures 30 degrees, and Angle I is on a straight line with Angle G and
Angle H. Find: The measure of Angle I.
2mins Closure & Consolidation
Summarize the key concepts learned in the lesson.
Ask students to reflect on what they have learned and any questions they may still have.
