At omic h yd r ogen h a vin g a n exp er imen t a l gr ou n d st a t e of 1 3 .6 eV ca n
on ly exist in a va cu u m or in isola t ion , a n d a t omic h yd r ogen ca n n ot go
b elow t h is gr ou n d st a t e in isola t ion . However , t h er e is n o kn own
comp osit ion of ma t t er con t a in in g h yd r ogen in t h e gr ou n d st a t e of 1 3 .6
eV. It is a myt h t h a t h yd r ogen h a s a t h eor et ica l gr ou n d st a t e b a sed on

Recen t ly, a r econ sid er a t ion of t h e p ost u la t es of q u a n t u m
mech a n ics, h a s given r ise t o a closed for m solu t ion of a Sch r o d in ger -like
wa ve eq u a t ion b a sed on fir st p r in cip les [1 ]. Hyd r ogen a t p r ed ict ed
lower en er gy levels h a s b een id en t ified in p r eviou s d a t a . Th e t r a n sit ion
of h yd r ogen t o fr a ct ion a l q u a n t u m en er gy levels is r ep or t ed b y t h e
a ssign men t of soft Xr a y emission s fr om t h e in t er st ella r med iu m
ob ser ved b y La b ov a n d Bowyer [2 ] a n d b y t h e a ssign men t of t h e sou r ce
of 50 eV a n oma lou s t h er ma l b r oa d en in g of t h e Ba lmer lin es ob ser ved b y
Ku r a ica a n d Kon jevic [3 ] d u r in g a glow d isch a r ge of h yd r ogen -a r gon
mixt u r es wh ich wa s n ot ob ser ved wit h n eon -h yd r ogen mixt u r es or p u r e
h yd r ogen ir r esp ect ive of ca t h od e ma t er ia l.
Cer t a in in or ga n ic ion s p r ed ict ed b y Mills [1 ] ser ve a s "t r a n sit ion
ca t a lyst s" wh ich r eson a n t ly a ccep t en er gy fr om h yd r ogen a t oms a n d
r elea se t h e en er gy t o t h e su r r ou n d in gs. Ar gon ion is a ca t a lyst t h a t wa s
p r esen t in t h e h yd r ogen glow d isch a r ge of Ku r a ica a n d Kon jevic [3 ].
Lower -en er gy h yd r ogen a t oms, h yd r in os, ca n ca u se a n a u t oca t a lyt ic
