BEVANS CHIMNEY SWEEP AND HANDYMAN SERVICES It is very important to check your chimney before lighting the fire. The primary job of the chimney sweep is to help prevent chimney fires and reduce the risk of dangerous emissions caused by blocked/partially blocked appliances, flueways and chimneys. However, the sweep will also check the structural integrity of the chimney. When a fire is lit, the air from the room passes through the grate to fuel the fire; this releases gases, which cause soot accumulation. If the soot is left to accumulate, it can block the chimney; this can lead to harmful gases escaping into the house and/or a chimney fire. Having your chimney swept at least once a year is the best safety measure you can take but other safety measures include investing in an audible carbon monoxide alarm and a smoke alarm; using a good fireguard to prevent embers entering the room; choosing dry hardwoods over softwood to lessen creosote build-up, and storing solid fuel away from the fireplace. Bevans Chimney Sweep and Handyman Services can now in addition to their other services install solid fuel burners. Due to the rising cost of gas and electricity this is becoming an increasingly popular alternative with many people and of course it is extremely handy in a power cut as it is not reliant on electricity. For more information about their solid fuel burner installation service or to arrange a chimney check call Bevans Chimney Sweep on 01239 682203 or 07862 752193.

Scheme to cut waste

NEW funding is being given to Pembrokeshire County Council to invest in services to cut and recycle waste. A kerbside recycling scheme for glass will be one of several new projects to be set up. Some 7.7milion for the South West Wales materials efficiency project was confirmed last week by the deputy minister for European programmes, Alun Davies AM. Five different schemes are included within Pembrokeshire which is backed by 4.5 million from the European R e g i o n a l Development Fund through the Welsh Government. The councils five schemes within the South West Wales materials efficiency project include glass recycling, which will provide households with a kerbside glass collection service in conjunction with the current kerbside recycling schemes. The majority of households will be provided with a 44litre recycling box for unwanted glass bottles and jars, which will be collected on their usual bin day. Charges against pair are dropped

ALTHOUGH a crown prosecutor told a court that police could still produce forensic evidence in a case in which two Cardigan men were accused of causing criminal damage to a window owned by Tai Ceredigion he would withdraw the charge. Andrew Peter Reading aged 22, of 21 Ridgeway, Cardigan, and 18-year-old Sean Smithers, 39 Derwen Gardens, Adpar, Newcastle Emlyn, were alleged to have caused 300 damage to the window on October 30 last year. During the brief hearing Smithers asked when his clothing would be returned and was told he could have them after police had completed their inquiries. The charges against the defendants, who were represented by Stephen Welch, were discharged and Smlthers granted costs.
