Cardboard Robot Arm

Supplies
• Flat cardboard (12x12)
• A Pencil, marker, or pen
• Scissors
• plastic straws
• Hot glue gun (ask for adult help), or tape!
• Yarn or heavy string
• Ruler (if needed)

1. Trace your hand and part of your arm on a flat piece of cardboard. Keep your
fingers loosely together.
2. Cut the shape of your arm out from the cardboard, then cut between the
fingers to separate all five.
3. Using your pencil, fold the fingers and thumb at the knuckles. Try to keep the
other parts of your arm flat.
4. Cut straws into 11 small tubes and 4 -1” tube, glue or tape one small tube in
each knuckle of the fingers on your arm and the 4 - 1” tubes on the palm of
your robot arm.
5. Cut a small band of cardboard that will fit around your palm and glue or tape
it to the side of your arm cutout.
6. Let dry completely.
7. Using yarn, tie a large knot or several knots at the top of your first straw tube
for each finger. Use glue if the knot does not stop the string from pulling out
of the top tube. String the opposite end through the tubes of each finger and
the long tube in the palm. Tie a small loop at the end of each string to wrap
around the top of your finger. This takes some time to figure out how long to
cut each string.
8. Time to test out your robotic arm! As you pull the string, it should pull the
robot fingers down, thru the channels. Try to grab something with your robot
arm. Make two for fun!
