Colour Coding Procedure for Portable, Fixed and Circulating Lifting Equipment

UKCS-TI-013

Introduction
To comply with Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulation 7 (LOLER), Marking of Lifting Equipment, all lifting appliances and lifting accessories on BP UK Upstream Region Installations will be plainly marked/hard stamped with their Safe Working Load (SWL). In addition to this, all portable, circulating and fixed lifting equipment will be colour coded to give visual indication of its certification status. Colour coding is an established industry practice, all BP-operated Installations (both on and offshore) will use one colour code system as indicated in Paragraphs 2 and 3. Any other coding convention must be discontinued. For some Installations the application of colour coding for fixed lifting equipment can be difficult to implement due to access, therefore the practice of colour coding fixed lifting equipment can be relinquished, providing a rigorous process for its safe management and control is in place and understood by all persons involved with lifting equipment and its use, ie Written Schemes of Examination (WSE). Each Business Unit is encouraged to review their fixed lifting equipment with a view to optimising the inventory based on useage. This will ensure that the inspector's time spent on the Installation is used efficiently and cost effectively.

Portable and Fixed Lifting Appliances and Accessories

The following colour code cycle shall be used to indicate the current portable and fixed lifting equipment: GREEN YELLOW BLUE Then back to GREEN Portable lifting appliances and accessories that have been rejected on post-use examinations and stored in the quarantined area of the rigging loft will have their colour coding overpainted with white paint and be tagged 'not suitable for use' until such time that the item is returned to the supplier/mechanical handling contractor for repair or replacement. Fixed lifting equipment, which has not been recertified due to either a defect or overdue inspection, will be colour coded with black paint and tagged 'not suitable for use'.

Circulating Slings or Transit Slings

All circulating lifting accessories such as slings in transit, shall use the following colour code cycle. This will ensure that all Installation equipment is easily identified and kept separate from the circulating equipment. BROWN PURPLE Then back to BROWN

Cargo Carrying Units

Cargo Carrying Units (CCUs) and their attached slings and shackles are a sub-section of circulating lifting equipment. However, they do not require to be colour coded, provided the slings and shackles are integral with, and referenced on the proof test plate or unit certificate of fitness of the CCU.

For the UK Upstream Region Business Units the colour codes shall change every 6 months. For other BP sites where applicable, the colour codes shall change every 12 months. The BP Master Agreement (MA) Supplier is responsible for ensuring that the colour coding is correctly applied to all items of lifting equipment and in line with the BP or third-party operating site/Installation annual rigging loft change out matrix. This shall require the requesting authority to specify the site for which it is required on the purchase request. The BP MA Supplier shall reject all purchase requests which do not comply with this procedure. Note: The BP UK Upstream Region lifting equipment strategy is to change out portable lifting equipment (rigging loft contents) for stripdown inspection and recertification every 6 months. BP-owned portable and fixed lifting equipment located on the platform or Installation (portable and fixed) shall be examined and recertified to coincide with the changeout of the contract rigging loft, in order to maintain a common certification period and hence a common colour code. The current colour code for the platform or Installation shall be clearly displayed in the rigging loft and at other locations throughout the Installation.
