What is the
Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR?
The Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR is a rare
masterpiece of a car, blending its
aggressive race car design with elegant
curves. Its simple, aerodynamic body stays
stuck to the ground (or at least it was meant
to.) Paired with a fabulous 6.9-liter naturally
aspirated V12 engine that produces around
an astonishing 740 horsepower which
allows it to reach blistering speeds. Built for
the track, it lacks the safety aids of modern
supercars. Behind the wheel, it’s both
exhilarating and unforgiving, where one
wrong move could turn beauty into deadly.
The CLK-GTR embodies the thrill of pure
performance, making it as breathtaking as
it is deadly.

WARNING
The Horrible
Crash
Why it is deadly.
One of the most infamous crashes involving the Mercedes-Benz
CLK-GTR occurred during the 1999 24 Hours of Le Mans, where
driver Peter Dumbreck experienced a terrifying airborne accident.
During a high-speed section of the track known as the Mulsanne
Straight, the car suddenly lifted off the ground, flipping into the
air and somersaulting before crashing back down. This happened
because the car’s aerodynamics, designed for extreme downforce
at high speeds, became destabilized by the airflow when the
front end lifted slightly, causing it to generate lift instead of
downforce. Shockingly, the same car flipped twice during practice
runs earlier that weekend, highlighting a dangerous flaw in the
car’s design. Thankfully, Dumbreck survived but he suffered
serious injuries, but the incidents exposed the risks of pushing
aerodynamics to their absolute limits.

Why it is deadly (continued)
The reasons that it could be considered as a deadly car are
1. The incredible Power and Speed
• One reason is the engine, as listed before the powerful 6.9 liter v12
which produces around 604 horsepower at stock it can acquire
around a speed of 220 miles per hour, being beyond what most
people will ever experience in a car.
2. Race technology
• The stiff suspension it has is designed and built for race/track
performance. This shows that even going on a small piece of un
even surface could lead to the driver potentially losing control.
3. Safety features
• The car has no traction control or ABS (anti-lock brakes) which makes it different
from most race cars nowadays which all have advanced safe safety features,
performance. This shows that even going on a small piece of un
even surface could lead to the driver potentially losing control.
3.
WhySafetyit
features
is deadly (continued)
• The car has no traction control or ABS (anti-lock brakes) which makes it different
from most race cars nowadays which all have advanced safe safety features,
which provide a sort of assist for drivers but not in this car. For the driver its life
or death because its all on you to control and handle the car.
4. Unpredictable Handling
• The Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR is specifically popular for being a pain to drive,
literally. The inconvenient RWD (rear-wheel drive) system causes problems
having bad weight distribution with the engine also being in the back causing
oversteer also known as drifting if you’re to aggressive on the throttle.
5. Visibility
• The lowered seats and small windshield make it difficult for the driver to have
optimal visibility. This increases risk on track not making the vision optimal.
6. Positioning and Comfort
• The small driver seat with little to no space for the driver causes claurtraphobia
with minimal seat adjustments. The pedals have a slight offset to the right
making it uncomfortable. This was especially inconvenient considering it was
used in the 24 Hours of Le Mans which is know for being a tedious pain for
drivers considering it’s a 24 hour long endurance race.
