Summary
The Beginnings of the Socialist New Belgrade
The First Phase of Building of New Belgrade 19471950

The first phase of the building of New Belgrade lasted from 1947 to
1950. It was one of some 70 working actions during the Five-Years Plan. Some
142.000 builders, mostly between 14 and 25 years of age, took part in the action.
Every seventh builder was decorated with the title of shock-worker. Political,
cultural and sports life was also organized for the builders. The work went on
under conditions of lack of labour force, poor housing facilities and food for the
builders and campaign-like mobilization of the young in the years which were
anyway marked by mass participation. According to a document referring to
194850, 11 youths lost their lives during this action. Deaths of two more youths
on their way back home from the building site should be added to this. Through
their voluntary work, these young people built the building of the Presidency of
the Government (the future SIV), the Representative Hotel (later the Yugoslavia
Hotel) and Students Town, but completion of these objects had to await later
times, since only one block of the Students Town for 850 students was finished
in this phase; the first inmates moved in early 1951.
