ENGAGE Ask students to name their favorite person, place, or


thing and write these on the board.

EXPLORE Show a picture of a famous landmark (e.g., Eiffel

"What makes these names different?" Lead students
to notice the distinction between specific and general
names.

EXPLAIN

(Discussion) Define nouns: "A noun is a word that names a


person, place, thing, or idea."

Differentiate between proper nouns and


common nouns: Proper nouns name specific
people, places, or things and are capitalized
(e.g., Maria, Manila, Eiffel Tower). Common

nouns are general names and are not
capitalized unless they start a sentence (e.g.,
girl, city, tower).

Provide examples of proper and common


nouns on the board.

Highlight the capitalization rule for proper


nouns.

ELABORATE Hands-On Activities:
