TRGOVITE: THE CULTURAL CAPITAL OF VALAHIA

Trgovite has a special place in the history of the Romanians, on account of the three centuries when it was the princely residence, the capital of Wallachia, and the main economical, political, military, cultural and religious center of the area. Medieval Trgovite evolved from a rural establishment, attested in documents of the 7th and 9th centuries. The process of urban development was accelerated by the presence of a permanent market place, then by the establishment of a princely court in the late 14th century during the reign of Mircea cel Batran. Along with Curtea de Arges, Trgovite became the capital of Wallachia from 1394 to 1396, and then from 1417 to 1418. From 1418 to 1465 Trgovite was the only capital of the country. After the year 1465, both Trgovite and Bucharest shared this role. Starting from the XIV century, the most important political and military events of Romanian medieval history occurred at Trgovite. Being situated on an important international trading route (the Road of Bran and Braila), Trgovite had permanent contact with foreign products, which gave the possibility for some traders and manufacturers to settle down here, as well as to a small fraction of the foreign populations (Germans). Between the 15th and 17th centuries, Trgovite was the main cultural, economic, political and administrative center of Wallachia. Capital and princely court, the town of Trgovite was also an important cultural center in Wallachia, but most important of all, it was the first printing center in the country. Prince Radu the Handsome founded the first printing house at Dealu Monastery. Here, under the direct guidance of the monk Macarie, the first three books in Slavonic were printed (Liturghierul in 1508, Octoihul in 1510 and Evangheliarul in 1512). These first initiatives were then carried out

through centuries by the deacon Coresi, who printed in Trgovite in 1558 the work named Triodul Penticostar slavonesc, a real masterpiece of the printing art of those times. In the mid-17th XII century, during the reign of Matei Basarab, Trgovite knew a vivid cultural activity, animated by the Greek cleric Matei al Mirelor (Mireul) and the chronicler-treasurer Stavrinos. At this time, the community of the scholars, educated in the classical spirit, had a great contribution to the establishment of a higher education institution, where the students were taught Greek and Latin. These scholars also contributed to the setting up of a new printing house, where works were printed in Romanian. In his turn, the scholar Udriste Nasturel carried out an intense activity at the cultural center in Trgovite and supported the idea of printing books in Slavonic and distributing them to the Orthodox Balkan states. The new college, Schola graeca et latina (16461652) was organized according to the model of similar institutions in the West. The college existed together with scoala de slovenie, where the teaching staff was made up of teachers specialized in Slavonic and Romanian grammar and lexicology. In its turn, the new printing house, based in the Metropolitan cathedral, printed not only the first works in Romanian or in both Slavonic and Romanian, but also the famous work Indreptare a legii, one of the first law codes in Europe, printed in a national language. During the reign of Constantin Brancoveanu, a new printing house was installed at the Metropolitan Church; here a very intense activity was carried out between 1709-1715 and many works were printed both in Romanian and in Slavonic. The main animator of this laborious enterprise was the metropolitan bishop of Ungrovlahia, Antim Ivireanul himself, a famous politician, writer and man of letters. The books printed at Trgovite during the first decades of the 18th century are real graphic masterpieces, where the title pages, the letters and the vignettes ornamented with vegetal motifs are, from the stylistic point of view, related to the sculptured stone frames or to the wooden iconostasis specific to the ecclesiastic architecture of the time. A real documentary treasure, consisting in documents and objects that bring back parts of the town history is now in the good care of the National Museum Complex Princely Court. A large number of buildings - architectural and historical monuments - shelter museums and exhibitions destined to reveal, to both local people and tourists, the glorious

monuments and the intense creative activity in the town of Trgovite. Thus, among the first group of museums, we must mention the History Museum and the Arts Museum. In the vicinity, the next group is made up of the Museum of the Dambovita Writers, sheltered by the residence that once belonged to Al. Bratescu-Voinesti, and the Printing and Old Romanian Book Museum, sheltered by the residence of the great scholar Constantin Cantacuzino Stolnicul. Not far away, there is another tourist attraction, Stelea Galleries, where periodical exhibitions are presented in the specially designed room by the architect Nicolae Ghica Budesti. In the neighbourhood of the Catholic Church St. Francis there is the painter house and studio of the painter Gheorghe Petrascu. In this house a valuable collection of the maestro can be watched and admired. Close to the old center of the town, there is another museum, Casa Blendea (Blendea Residence), where a permanent exhibition comprising the artistic works of the sculptor and painter Vasile Blendea can be visited. Among the monuments that have witnessed the rich history of the town, we should mention the Aulic Complex of the Princely Court - the largest in the country-, Dealu Monastery and Stelea Monastery. A town of churches over 47 churches, most of which date back to the Middle Ages, is guarded by the Chindia Tower, built by Vlad Tepes. Trgovite takes advantage of an original combination of medieval and modern architectural elements. The contribution of the towns most important representatives princes, nobility, the high clergy, rich merchants - and of the best manufacturers of the time finds its reflection in the edifices dating from the 14th and 18th centuries. The structure, the architecture and decoration of these monuments have influenced the evolution of the ecclesiastical and civil architecture in Wallachia. In fact, the urban structure of the town highlights the specific Romanian style of the former princely court and capital, both expressed in the free disposition of the streets, adapted to the forms of relief, in the rationale between the commercial, industrial and residential areas. At the same time, the general disposition of the houses in the middle of large gardens, contrasting with the central area, where the shops and workshops are concentrated, reveals the same characteristics. Rejuvenated by the new and modern buildings, the medieval town of Trgovite is the only witness of a long cultural tradition, which has been brought back to life by the new University.

FOREWORD
Professor PhD. Ion CUCUI, Rector of Valahia University from Trgovite

Nowadays a university can no longer be competitive unless it consolidates its tradition of intellectual innovation and, based on projects initiated by the university itself, interacts with the technological, economic and cultural environment. Around us are gradually taking shape the market of academic degrees and the competition for grants of scientific research and specialized consultancy. Higher education appeared in Trgovite in 1991, with the creation of the Technical and Economic University College; the following year, through the Decree of the Romanian Government no 288/01.06.1992, Valahia University was born. If in the beginning the Valahia University consisted in two faculties and a university college with a number of 14 specializations and about 700 students, from one year to the next, the higher education in Trgovite diversified, nowadays having 8 faculties organized in conformity with Bologna system (license, master, doctoral studies), with 10 000 students (daily studies or distance learning). In the environment of Romanian higher education, Valahia University from Trgovite is characterized by a vivid dynamics, materialized in the improvement of the educational process from one year to the next, in the increase of the number of students and the improvement of the conditions offered for life and study, and also in the enrichment of the social basis.
4

Being an essential part of the Romanian higher education, Valahia University from Trgovite brings in the process of European modernization and integration, high-quality education, competitive scientific research, students and teachers mobility in the European area. Being a young university, Valahia University from Trgovite found it easier to adapt it to the norms imposed by the LMD system, generalized throughout Europe. The passage to the system of transferable credits, a few years ago, the harmonization of the curricula, not only in the national but also in the international arena, are priorities that represent the guarantee of the recognition and integration of our University in the area of the European higher education, an education which has itself been undergoing continual change during

the past several years. The reality of the introduction of the LMD system consists in numerous courses for our students, at different levels, in universities abroad, and, at the same time, in the training of foreign students at our university. Valahia University from Trgovite represents an essential part of the international academic community, with the same moral, educational, scientific and cultural values. The prestige which Valahia University from Trgovite enjoys is made manifest in its programs of collaboration with universities from France, Finland, Greece, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Denmark, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Germany, Bulgaria, Portugal. Valahia University from Trgovite has consistent and modern material endowment: more than 250 laboratories equipped with the newest appliances and IT equipment, language laboratories, 25 amphitheatres, more than 200 classrooms, areas for study, libraries including more than 100 000 books, a scientific and technological park, its own publishing house, the most modern IT center endowed with the latest electronic devices, INTERNET/INTRANET communication network, the university assembly hall and the International Conference Center, where the presentations of masters or doctoral theses are held, and also where other academic manifestations and festivities take place.

The students of Valahia University from Trgovite enjoy numerous facilities and social services. They have a Students Club made up of a hall with 450 places, a discotheque and a ballet room housing cultural, educational and entertainment activities, and 7 modern hostels for students. There is also a university restaurant functioning, with a capacity of 300 places. The consulting room of Valahia University of Trgovite provides general and stomatologic medical assistance. Valahia University from Trgovite offers its students the possibility of continuing their education, after obtaining their license, by: -masters degree courses; -doctoral studies; -post-university specialization studies, continual training and professional conversion. Self-evaluation has remained the instrument of self-renewal, but the assessments made by external observers are instruments to be taken into account in order for a university to be competitive. In this respect, Valahia University from Trgovite was evaluated, in the past years, among the first 12 universities in the country in point of scientific research.

In this respect and given the increasing number of students, our future plans are to allocate a surface of about 9 ha inside the campus, where, starting with the year 2012, we will build an extension containing the necessary study spaces, accommodation facilities (at least two hostels providing 200-230 places) and other complementary amenities such as gymnasium and outdoor sport grounds. The diversification of the programs of study, of the academic areas and specializations in the following period 2011-2013 will offer working places for both teachers and auxiliary and administrative personnel. The investments in the development of the University Campus in Alexandria will attract implicitly another capital capable of stimulating economic growth and profit both for economic agents and private individuals, inhabitants of Alexandria and Teleorman county. Due to this ample development we can also anticipate a rise in the level of culture and civilization in the municipality of Alexandria, with long-term effects.
