When a body falls through a viscous medium, it experiences an upward viscous d,
which tends to retard its motion. As the velocity of the body increases due to ravi
the viscous drag also goes on increasing due to increase in the velocity,
rag
ity,
Finally, a stage is reached, when the wei
ight of the body becomes just equal to the
sum of the upthrust and upward viscous
drag. At this stage, no net force acts on the
body and the body begins to move with a constant velocity. ‘The maximum constant
velocity acquired by a body while falling through a viscous medium is called its
terminal velocity. The value of terminal velocity for different bodies is different.

‘The distance of the point of suspension and the point of oscillation is called length
of the pendulum, When the metallic bob is displaced slightly on either side and
released, it begins to oscillate about the mean position. If the thread makes angle

mg of the bob acting vertically downwards and (ii) the tension T in the string. The
weight mg has two rectangular components (a) the component mg cos 6 acting along
the thread which balances the tension T in the thread and (b) tangential component
