Save Water for better tomorrow

We have faced water shortage in the past, and if we don t bother to find a long term solution there will be water shortage in future too. We know how serious the problem is and we are also aware of the solution but we fail to implement it.BMC has made it compulsory for all upcoming constructions to implement rain harvesting system. But neither the private nor the government constructed buildings arefollowing it. Everyone will talk about water conservation during special days like World Environment Day or Water Conservation Day, but will forget about it eventually. We need to create awareness and organise campaigns to educate people about the seriousness of the issue. This has to happen on a day-to-day basis not just a particular day of the year. Aftab Siddque, ALM, member We are responsible for our environment The catchment areas are not getting enough water. Thus, to keep the water in reserve the city is facing 30% water cut, but this is only for few days. This should not be viewed as a short term solution. There is a bigger and a serious problem that needs to be dealt with. Naturally our environment is at a risk and we are responsible for bringing such changes. And due to this we face water shortage problems. For instance, if you cut down tress then the carbon, nitrogen equation will be disturbed. The skyscrapers would not produce oxygen neither are they a substitute for trees, so we must think of the consequences.People should harvest rain water, recycle water, cut down the consumption of water and repair the leakage taps in their homes. Everyone has to do their bit to save water, so that such problems don t arise in the future. Janak Daftary, environment worker Use natural and traditional methodto conserve water To come in terms with the water shortage in the city we could try some of the natural, tried and tested methods. Nature has the capacity to meet all our needs. Some individuals misuse the natural resources which results in most of us being deprived of the availing natural resources. Most of the coastal wells are sourced from sea water, to produce drinkable water.Reverse osmosis plants produce hazardous water, and consume energy. The most advanced solutions are the most simple to operate. Nature can provide us water through wells, the method that Mumbai depended on before the major water schemes were introduced. With a 100 year jump in biosanitiser ecology technology based on nature, we would be ready for well tested total sewage recycle for non potable needs. Vag Shenai, founder, green cross society
