RiverWalk & Talk

Meet Our Residents
Sixty seven years together and still holding hands. Elias and Felicia Friedman recently decided to make RiverWalk their home. Felicia Friedman was born in Krakow, Poland to a prominent and philanthropic family who had generations of history in Krakow. She was the third of five siblings and was an excellent student. In September 1939, the war brought dramatic changes and dangerous adventures to her life. Her family was evicted from their lovely apartment and forcibly moved to the ghetto where they shared the premises with three other families. Despite the traumatic experience and cold winter, Felicia remembers good people helping her to survive the persecutions she faced. Felicia was forced to work in Siemens electronic factory on the night shift and was assigned to sleep in a dormitory, three levels up. Eventually, Felecia moved out of the ghetto and was moved to Auschwitz and Ravensbrck where she would stay until the war ended. Felecia was one of twelve women who walked back to Krakow. She was only 19 at the time. When she arrived in Krakow, she worked at a Red Cross hospital where she would meet Elias. Elias Friedman was born in Krakow. His family owned three factories, a brick mill, a flour mill and a saw mill. They were very successful. He was the youngest of eight children. They attended public school

and Hebrew gymnasium. During the war, he worked for Siemens Cable Company where he was befriended by a professional doctor. During a raid on a Thereizin factory, Elias suffered an injury to his foot that developed into gangrene. Fortunately, the wound was cared for by his doctor friend. The Jewish doctor saved his life! Elias and Felicia were together at Landsberg, the first Displaced Person Camp. They were married in 1948 before sailing to The United States. When they arrived, they began looking for an apartment on Stanton Street. The eventually move to Brooklyn, near Ebbits Field. Elias began working in a factory for Bartons Candy. He was a machinist, making 60 cents an hour. After many years and a sugar shortage, he was promoted to the position of Production Manager. The Freemans have two children. Barbara lives near Edison, NJ and has four children and Walter lives in Lawrence, NJ and had five children. Walter, a podiatrist, became a rabbi and founded a synagogue in NJ. The couple is blessed with grandchildren and great grandchildren who visit them often at RiverWalk. Felicia and Elias recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. We wish them many more anniversaries with us in good health.

RiverWalk Happenings...
RiverWalk was treated to a fabulous guided tour of the Museum of Modern Arts Diego Last month we enjoyed lunch at a local gem. Ginger Grill is a wonderful Kosher Chinese restaurant located on Riverdale Avenue. The service, food and company were just delightful. We enjoyed sweet and sour chicken, General Taos chicken and Pepper Steak. Elaine won the lunch trip at the New Years dinner and Betty wowed us with her chopstick skills. If you are looking for good Kosher Chinese food, Ginger Grill is the place to go.

The Agrarian Leader Zapata panel is an icon in the Museums collection. We ended our tour by learning more about Jackson Pollack and his painting One. It was a wonderful trip.

Giants Defeat Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI

Super Bowl Sunday has the power to make a football fan out of non football followers. The big game is even more exciting if we have one of our local teams to cheer on. The Giants did us proud and won the Super Bowl. Angel and Paul planned a wonderful and fun game themed dinner and the dining room was festively decorated. After dinner several residents watched the game on the big screen TV on the Lower Level.

Curious Cat Explores his Townby Bus By Caroline Golon of Halopets.com

Bus riders in Bridport, Dorset England often have an unusual companion on their way to and from work each day an adventurous, 15-year-old cat named Artful Dodger. Dodger, a beautiful orange tabby, regularly boards the bus at the stop near his house and takes a 10-mile round trip, much to the amusement of the bus passengers and drivers. Sometimes, Dodger even hops on a lucky riders lap for a cuddle. The bus drivers and regular passengers know Dodger, and always make sure he gets off at his stop at the end of each journey. Some passengers even bring Dodger food and treats each day. Dodgers owner, Fee She soon found out that wasnt the first time Dodger had gone cruising the city by mass transit. "That afternoon I saw Dodger climb on board another bus and I rushed to tell the driver. I was shocked when she told me Dodger was always on there and liked to sit on the seats because they are warm from where people have been sitting. The bus company, First, told the Telegraph that they dont mind if Dodger hitches a ride with them, saying, "Given this cat is elderly we suspect it would be eligible for free travel, perhaps a bus puss, if such a thing existed.

Jeanes, said she was extremely surprised when she discovered the cats secret life. One of her daughters friends said she saw Dodger on bus 10 miles from the familys home. Fee tells the London Telegraph, "I couldn't believe it and panicked. I got into my car to go off and look for him and then at that moment the bus pulled up near our house and lo and behold he got off.

Information about the Month of March

Marchs birthstone is the Bloodstone and the flower is the Jonquil. Marchs name is derived from the Roman month, Martius, honoring Mars, the god of war. Since wars and conquests were important in Roman life, it was natural for a month to be dedicated to the deity of war. Today, March is the month we raise awareness on brain injury, Irish-American heritage, mental retardation, colorectal cancer, multiple sclerosis, kidney health and chronic fatigue syndrome. It is also the month we celebrate frozen food, noodles, umbrellas, music involvement, humorists, crafts, professional social workers, the Red Cross and womens history.

Resident Submissions
I Am Free Submitted by Charlie Waugh Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free I'm following the path God laid for me I took his hand when I heard Him call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day To laugh, to live, to work, or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I found that place at close of day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, ah yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow. I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow My life's been full, I've savored much, Good friends, good times, A loved ones touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me. God wanted me now, He set me free! The Missing Three Thousand by David Young Submitted by Betty Joblove Source: Kew Gardens Hills Jewish Center Bulletin Poetry Corner Entombed in mangled twisted steel They left their footprints in ashen dust. The missing Three Thousand. The innocent of the young The wisdom of the old Vanished into ashen dust. The missing Three Thousand. A strong swirling wind Gently embraced the ashen dust And laid them at heavens door. The missing Three Thousand. G-d held the ashes in His hand. He gently blew the ashen dust Of the departed to everlasting life. The missing Three Thousand. The Memorial Wall of Remembrance Their names chiseled in stone. Loved ones trace with their finger In the carved letters of their names. The missing Three Thousand have come home. Submitted by Anna Goldenberg What wisdom can you find that is greater than kindness? Jean Jacques Rousseau To paraphrase a well-known saying, I have met wisdom and I have met kindness; kindness is better. Wisdom is profound and we are impressed by it, but kindness is both profound and simple. It warms the soul long after it is experienced. Kindness is at the very heart of what it means to be human.

Think of something that makes you smile.
