CLASS 10
SECTION A
1. A conducting wire carries 1021 electrons in 4 minutes. What is the current flowing through the wire?
2. An electric toaster has a power rating of 200 W. It operates for 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the
evening. How much does it cost to operate the toaster for 10 days at Rs. 5 per kWh?
3. Assertion (A): In electrolysis of water, the volume of hydrogen liberated is twice the volume of oxygen
formed.
Reason (R): Water (H2O) has hydrogen and oxygen in the ratio of 1 : 2 by volume.
4. Assertion(A): Large concave mirrors are used to concentrate sunlight to produce heat in solar cookers.
Reason(R): Concave mirror converges the light rays falling on it to a point.
5. Assertion (A): Myopia is the defect of the eye in which only nearer objects are seen by the eye.
Reason (R): The eyeball is elongated
6. Assertion (A): Concave mirrors are used as make- up mirrors.
Reason (R):When the face is held within the focus of a concave mirror, then a diminished image of the
face is seen in the concave mirror
7. Assertion (A):pH of ammonium nitrate solution is acidic.
Reason (R): Solution of a salt of weak base and strong acid is acidic
8. White scales get deposited in the inner walls of boilers & electric kettles after prolonged use. What is
the reason for this effect? How can these white scales be removed?
9. What type of mirror is used in a torch as a reflector? Give reasons, also.
SECTION B ( 3 MARKS)
10.A metal A, which is used in thermite process, when heated with oxygen gives an oxide B, which is
amphoteric in nature. Identify A and B. Write down the reactions of oxide B with HCl and NaOH.
11.A silver article generally turns black when kept in the open for a few days. The article when rubbed with
toothpaste again starts shining.
(i) Why do silver articles turn black when kept in the open for a few days? Name the phenomenon
involved.
(ii) Name the black substance formed and give its chemical formula.
12.A student is not able to see clearly the questions written on the blackboard placed at a distance of 5 m
from him. Name the defect of vision he is suffering from. Write causes of this defect. How can this
defect be corrected?
Draw label diagram of defected and corrected eye.
13.2 g of lead nitrate powder is taken in a boiling tube . The boiling tube is heated over a flame. Now
answer the
following:
(i) State the color of the fumes evolved and the residue left.
(ii) Name the type of chemical reaction that has taken place and write its balanced equation.
14.A student dropped a few pieces of marble in dilute hydrochloric acid contained in a test tube. The
evolved gas was then passed through lime water. What change would be observed in lime water?
Identify the gas that evolved. What happens when the evolved gas is passed in excess through
lime water? Write a balanced chemical equation for each change observed?
15.What do you mean by Power of a lens? A convex lens of focal length of 25 cm & a concave lens of
focal length of 10 cm are placed in close contact with each other. Calculate the power of this
combination of lenses.
16.. (i.) Explain the formation of the rainbow with a suitable diagram. (ii.) Why does the sky appear dark
instead of blue to an astronaut?
17.
SECTION C ( 5 MARKS)
18.Why are certain compounds called hydrocarbons? Write the general formula for homologous series of
alkanes, alkenes and alkynes and also draw the structure of the first member of each series. Write the
name of the reaction that converts alkenes into alkanes and also write a chemical equation to show the
necessary conditions for the reaction to occur.
19.It is desired to obtain an erect image of an object, using a concave mirror of focal length 20 cm.
(i) What should be the range of distance of the object from the mirror?
(ii) Will the image be bigger or smaller than the object?
(iii) Draw a ray diagram to show the image formation in this case.
a) A child reads words of a book with the help of a convex lens keeping it close to the book. He
finds words enlarged and erect when he gradually withdraws the lens away from the book. At
one position, the words again become distinctly visible but this time, these are enlarged and
inverted. Explain the difference with the help of a ray diagram for both cases.
b) An object is held at the principal focus of a concave lens of focal length Where the image will
form.
20.(i) Write the steps involved in the extraction of pure metals in the middle of the activity series from their
carbonate ores.
(ii) How is copper extracted from its sulphide ore? Explain the various steps supported by chemical
equations. Draw labelled diagram for the electrolytic refining of copper.
21.Explain the following
(a) Reactivity of Al decreases if it is dipped in HNO3
(b) Carbon cannot reduce the oxides of Na or Mg
(c) NaCl is not a conductor of electricity in solid state whereas it does conduct electricity in aqueous
solution as well as in molten state
(d) Iron articles are galvanized
(e) Metals like Na, K, C a and Mg are never found in their free state in nature
22.

23.(a) Find the equivalent resistance of arm A.
