achieve a classic or trendy look in your quilts and still have time for your
family.

These 10 big block quilts have everything you’re looking for. There are

Materials
• 1¾ yards white-with-gold dot*
• 2¼ yards black print*
• 1¾ yards black and gold paisley print*
• 1¼ yards gold paisley*
• 1 yard gold-and-white herringbone*
• Backing to size
• Batting to size*
• Thread
• Basic sewing tools and supplies
*Fabrics from Benartex and Warm & White batting from The Warm Company used to make
sample.

Project Notes
Read all instructions before beginning this project.
Stitch right sides together using a ¼" seam allowance unless otherwise
specified.
Materials and cutting lists assume 40" of usable fabric width for yardage.
WOF – width of fabric
HST – half-square triangle
QST – quarter-square triangle

Cutting
From white-with-gold dot cut:
• 44 (3") A squares
• 12 (5½") B squares
• 44 (3⅜") C squares then cut once diagonally
• 16 (5⅞") D squares then cut once diagonally
• 8 (5⅞") P squares then cut once diagonally

From black print cut:


• 4 (3") E squares
• 12 (5½") F squares
• 40 (3⅜") G squares then cut once diagonally
• 4 (5⅞") R squares then cut once diagonally
• 7 (2½") H/I strips, stitch short ends to short ends, then subcut into:
2 (2½" × 60½") H and 2 (2½" × 64½") I border strips
• 8 (2¼" × WOF) binding strips

From gold paisley cut:


• 44 (3⅜") J squares then cut once diagonally
• 12 (5⅞") Q squares then cut once diagonally

From gold-and-white herringbone cut:


• 4 (5½") K squares
• 16 (5⅞") L squares then cut once diagonally

From black-and-gold paisley cut:


• 4 (10½") M squares
• 7 (4½") N/O strips, stitch short ends to short ends, then subcut into
2 (4½" X 64½") N and 2 (4½" × 72½") O border strips

Completing the Blocks


1. Stitch one C HST to one J HST as shown in Figure 1. Press. Make 48.

2. Stitch one G HST to one J HST as shown in Figure 1. Make 40.

3. Stitch one C HST to one G HST as shown in Figure 1. Make 40.

4. Stitch one D HST to one L HST as shown in Figure 2. Make 32.

5. Stitch one P HST to one Q HST as shown in Figure 2. Make 16.

6. Stitch one R HST to one Q HST as shown in Figure 2. Make 8.


7. Arrange three A squares, one each E and K square, four C-J units, and
two each C-G and G-J units into four rows as shown in Figure 3. Sew rows
together and join to make one Block A. Press. Make four.

8. Arrange 2 A squares, 2 each C-J, C-G, G-J and D-L units into three rows
as shown in Figure 4. Sew rows together and join to make one Block B.
Press. Make 16.

9. Arrange three each B and F squares, four P-Q units, two R-Q units and
one M square into three rows as shown in Figure 5. Sew rows together and
join to make one Block C. Press. Make four.

Completing the Quilt


Refer to the Assembly Diagram as needed for construction.

1. Join the four Block C blocks together to create the quilt center.

2. Join four Block B blocks to make a row. Repeat to make a second row.
Join rows to each side of the quilt center.

3. Join four Block B blocks and two Block A blocks to make a row as
shown. Repeat to make a second row. Stitch to the top and bottom of the
quilt center.

4. Stitch H strips to each side of the quilt center and I strips to the top and
bottom. Press.

5. Stitch N strips to each side of the quilt center and O strips to the top and
bottom to complete the quilt top.

6. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics and quilt as desired.

7. Join the binding strips and bind the edges referring to Quilting Basics.

pink, red-orange and bright blue tonals*
• ¾ yard medium blue tonal*
• 4 yards white solid*

• 24 (2½" × 8½") C rectangles

• 3 (4½" × 16½") E strips
• 2 (4½" × 36½") F strips
• 6 (8" × WOF) G/H strips, stitch short ends to short ends, then subcut
into:
2 (8" × 71½") G and 2 (8" × 36½") H border strips

Completing the Blocks


1. Stitch pairs of B rectangles together along short sides as shown in Figure
1. Make six sets of four pairs: green and gold, medium blue and red-orange,
red and lilac, and pink and bright blue. Press.

2. Stitch C strip to each unit from step 1, watching orientation, as shown in


Figure 2. Press. Make six each.

3. Select units from step 2 and join to opposite sides of D square as shown
in Figure 3 to make a center row. Press. Make six.

4. Arrange and stitch A squares to each end of remaining units from step 2
as shown in Figure 4 to make top/bottom rows. Press. Make six each.

5. Referring to the block drawing for color placement, stitch one each row
from step 4 to top and bottom of a center row to complete one block. Press.
Make six blocks.

Completing the Quilt


Refer to the Assembly Diagram as needed for construction.

1. Arrange blocks in three rows of two blocks each with an E strip between
each block, noting position of A squares when arranging rows. Sew into
three rows. Press.

2. Sew rows together with F strips between rows. Press.

3. Stitch one G strip to each side of quilt center. Press, then stitch one H
strip to the top and bottom. Press.

4. Create a quilt sandwich referring to Quilting Basics and quilt as desired.

5. Join the binding strips and bind the edges referring to Quilting Basics.
