HYDRAULIC CIRCUIT COMPONENTS

The hydraulic system consists essentially of two principal components:

- the BASE, whose function is to contain the liquids

- IWMS, whose function is to soften the water.

BASE
As well as acting as the load-bearing structure for the appliance, the base also contains the hydraulic
components.

- 12 -

Downloaded from [Link] manuals search engine

The following components are fitted to the base:

1. SUMP ASSEMBLY:
The sump is a container fitted with special ducts which collect and distribute the water for washing the
dishes.
The sump is connected by a series of ducts to the IWMS, the feed ducts to the two spray arms, and
the drain outlet.

2. SALT TANK:
The salt tank contains the salt which is used during the regeneration cycle
The salt tank is connected hydraulically to the IWMS.

3. RESIN WASHING TANK:

This tank contains the water which is collected during the regeneration and resin washing cycles, and
is connected hydraulically to the IWMS.

The circuits which connect the various components are fitted with special valves designed to guarantee the
efficiency and performance of the system.

4. BREATHER VALVE FOR RESIN WASHING TANK:

This float-type valve is fitted to the resin washing tank (underneath the tub).
The valve has two functions:
- To open the breather valve of the tank during the regeneration cycle in order to allow the salt-filled
water to enter the tank
- To close the breather valve during the drain cycle in order to guarantee maximum efficiency of the
pump (time required to drain the tank: 30 seconds).

5. RESIN WASHING TANK SEPARATOR VALVE:

This floating-ball valve is fitted to the exterior of the sump, and is connected by a duct to the resin
washing tank.
The function of this valve is to separate the salty water contained in the resin washing tank from the
softened washing water.

6. SUMP BOTTOM VALVE:

This is a floating-ball valve located inside the sump.
The valve has two functions:
- To separate the water in the washing circuit from the drain water during the washing cycle
- During the drain cycle, to ensure that the sump is drained even if the filtering system or periscope
are not fully efficient.

7. NON-RETURN VALVE (normally-closed type):

The membrane-type non-return valve is fitted to the exterior of the sump and connected directly to the
drain outlet.
Its function is to ensure that the water in the tub is kept separate from the external water supply circuit.
In effect, this valve prevents the water outside the appliance (from the sink, siphon etc.) from entering
the tub through the drain hose.
At the end of the drain phase, it also reduces the quantity of residual water remaining in the sump.

IWMS

The IWMS is an integrated water softening system which controls:

- WATER FILL CIRCUIT

- WATER FILL CONTROL SYSTEM

- WATER SOFTENING SYSTEM

- WATER DRAIN CIRCUIT

- STEAM VENTING SYSTEM

WATER FILL CIRCUIT

The water fill circuit is considered to be in "NORMAL" operating condition when:

2 - The fill solenoid valve is powered electrically

17 - The pressure switch is in the "EMPTY" position

14 - The volumetric tank is empty

15 - The RESET solenoid valve functions correctly.

OPERATION OF THE CIRCUIT

The fill water coming from the solenoid valve (2) passes through the air-break (5) to the resin container (11)
and fills the resin washing tank (12), then passing to the volumetric flow switching device (13) which deviates
the water in two directions. A small quantity (1/6) of the water is directed to the volumetric control dosing tank
(14); the remaining water (5/6 of the total flow) is ducted directly to the tub.

PATH OF 1/6 OF THE WATER

This part of the water enters the volumetric tank (14); when the water reaches the maximum level (full), this
actions the drain siphon which transfers the water through a duct towards the bottom. During this phase, the
water flow generates a dynamic pressure in the pressure chamber of the pressure switch (17), thus actioning
the pressure switch, which switches off the solenoid valve, thus allowing the programme to continue.
At the end of the fill cycle, and in any case before the beginning of the subsequent fill cycle, the RESET
solenoid valve (15) is actioned in order to ensure that the volumetric tank (14) is completely emptied, since
any residual water in the tank would alter the quantity of the water fill.

PATH OF 5/6 OF THE WATER

The greater part of the water passing through the volumetric flow switch (13) is directed into the tub in two
directions and in differing quantities.
A small quantity of the water is ducted directly into the tub through the steam vent; the remaining water
passes through a separate duct towards the bottom and flows into the sump.
The main purpose of directing different quantities of water in different directions is to ensure that the
pressure chamber is constantly cleaned and that the level control system functions with the maximum
reliability.

WATER FILL CIRCUIT

- 15 -

Downloaded from [Link] manuals search engine

WATER FILL CONTROL SYSTEM

This system controls the path taken by the water during the fill cycle within the IWMS, from the water intake
through the fill solenoid, along the entire internal circuit, and until the water reaches the tub.

The control system consists of the following sub-systems:

- VOLUMETRIC CONTROL OF WATER FILL

- CONTROL OF WATER LEVEL IN THE TUB

- CONTROL OF THE ANTI-OVERFLOW LEVEL

VOLUMETRIC CONTROL OF WATER FILL

This new VOLUMETRIC system controls the quantity of water in each fill cycle by means of a volumetric flow
switch which diverts a small quantity of water (1/6 of the total) into a special volumetric tank.
The system consists of the following components:

13 - Volumetric flow switch

14 - Volumetric tank

14 - Drain siphon (inside the volumetric tank)

15 - RESET solenoid valve (resets the tank)

CONTROL OF WATER LEVEL IN THE TUB (EMPTY / FULL)

This system is based on a conventional pressure switch which is connected to a pressure chamber (17) and
whose position makes it possible to control both the water in the volumetric tank and the level of the water in
the tub.
The signal generated by the pressure chamber directly actions the pressure switch and switches off the
solenoid valve.

CONTROL OF THE ANTI-OVERFLOW LEVEL

A second pressure chamber, positioned alongside the pressure chamber for the level pressure switch but at
a different height, controls the anti-overflow device (16). The two pressure chambers are inter-connected.
The signal which is generated by this pressure chamber as the level of the water in the tub increases directly
actions the fill solenoid valve, which closes the mechanical section of the circuit.

WATER TREATMENT SYSTEM

The water treatment system performs two functions: it softens the water (i.e. removes the calcium and
magnesium) by means of ion-exchange resins, and regenerates the resins by adding sodium chloride.

The system consists of the following components:

11 - Resin tank

7 - Adjustable-volume regeneration water tank

4 - Regeneration level regulation device

12 - Tank for resin washing water

9 - Regeneration solenoid valve

10 - Resin washing solenoid valve

18 - Resin washing water tank

WATER SOFTENING CIRCUIT

The water coming from the solenoid valve passes through the circuit until it reaches the resin tank (11). As it
filters slowly upwards through the resin layer, it is softened; the water then passes into the resin washing tank
(12) and from there it flows through the volumetric flow switch (13) and into the tub.

In the section of the circuit between the air break (5) and the resin tank (11), the water passes through a
calibrated valve (6) into the regeneration tank (7) which contains untreated water; the quantity of water
passing into this tank depends on the selected water hardness level.

WATER SOFTENING CIRCUIT

- 19 -

Downloaded from [Link] manuals search engine

RESIN REGENERATION AND WASHING CIRCUIT

During this phase, the regeneration solenoid valve (9) and the resin washing solenoid valve (10) are actioned
simultaneously.
The water deposited in the regeneration tank (7) descends (by gravity) to the salt tank (8), which is
positioned in the base of the appliance. As the water passes through the salt tank, it removes the appropriate
quantity of salty water, then passes upwards to the resin tank (11) where it passes downwards through the
resin layer (instead of passing upwards as in the water softening phase). The water then passes down to the
resin washing water tank (18), which is positioned in the base of the appliance.

The water deposited in the resin washing tank (12) then passes by force of gravity through the resin layer
(11) where it is washed, and then descends slowly to the resin washing water tank (18).

During this phase, the breather valve (19) fitted to the resin washing water tank (18) must open in order to
allow the water to flow correctly through the circuit.

The resin washing water tank (18) is emptied during the first phase of the subsequent drain cycle.

CONTROL OF REGENERATION VOLUMES

Four volumes of water are utilized for regeneration, totalling approximately 300 cc.
Depending on the type of dishwasher, regulation and exclusion of the regeneration system are performed in
different ways.

DW WITH ELECTROMECHANICAL TIMER

Regeneration is performed during every washing cycle.

REGULATION PROCEDURE

Five different levels of regeneration can be selected, each using a different quantity of water which is
controlled by the aperture or closure of a series of special valves.
The regeneration level is adjusted by turning a 5-position selector knob (located frontally in the upper
left-hand corner) until the mark is aligned with the desired level.
The appliance is factory-set to level 2.

DW WITH ELECTRONIC TIMER

Regeneration is performed at predetermined intervals depending on the level selected (and not during every
washing cycle).

REGULATION PROCEDURE

Ten levels of regeneration can be selected, each of which utilizes a fixed quantity of water (300 cc) and salt
(85 g) for each regeneration cycle.
The level of regeneration is controlled electronically, and is entered by pressing a combination of keys on the
control panel.
The appliance is factory-set to level 4.

REGENERATION TANK - FUNCTIONAL DIAGRAM

DISHWASHERS WITH MANUAL CONTROL SYSTEM:

- Valves A, B and C may be open or closed, and are connected to the respective dosing chambers
(a, b and c); chamber d is independent (not adjustable).

- If the valve is open, the corresponding dosing chamber is filled during the water fill cycle.

- If the valve is closed, the corresponding dosing chamber remains empty.

- When the regeneration solenoid valve is energized, the chambers are completely drained of water.

DISHWASHERS WITH ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEM:

- Valves A, B and C remain open, thus the corresponding dosing chambers (a, b and c) are always filled
with water, chamber (d), too, which is independent, is filled.

- When the regeneration solenoid valve is energized, all the chambers are completely drained of water.

- 23 -

WATER DRAIN CIRCUIT

The drain circuit is in "NORMAL" operating condition when:

23 - The motor is ON: drain cycle.

24 - The non-return valve is open.

22 - The sump bottom valve is open.

21 - The valve which separates the resin washing water is open.

19 - The breather valve on the resin container is closed.

OPERATION OF THE CIRCUIT

During the drain cycle, the motor operates in reverse direction (clockwise as seen from the impeller side),
thus draining the sump (20).
This generates a vacuum in the drain circuit, which empties the pressure chamber of the pressure switch
and causes the separation valve (21) for the resin washing water to open; this ensures that the tank which
contains the resin washing water (18) is emptied.

To ensure that this tank is completely drained, the breather valve (19) fitted to the top of the tank must close
in order to prevent the pump from switching off before the tank is completely empty.

- 24 -

Downloaded from [Link] manuals search engine

STEAM VENTING

The steam venting chamber is connected directly to the tub, and performs several functions:

- During the water fill cycles, it transfers to the tub any water that is dispersed as it passes through the air
break, as well as any excess water from the regeneration tank when this is full, and a small quantity of
water which overflows from the volumetric flow switch.

- It equalizes the pressure inside and outside the tub during the washing programme even if the door is
opened or closed, thus preventing any possible deformation of the tub, or resetting of the pressure switch
to the empty condition, or interruptions of the cycle etc.

- It improves the drying results by allowing the steam to condense on the internal surface of the steam
venting chamber.

- 25 -

HYDRAULIC SAFETY SYSTEMS
The hydraulic safety systems detect any possible malfunctions in the hydraulic circuits or leakage in any of
the components.
The safety devices are electromechanically and hydraulically operated, and remain in operation throughout
the washing cycle and, in some cases, even when the appliance is switched off.
The safety systems are fitted to dishwashers with both electromechanical and electronic timers.

ANTI-FLOODING system
ANTI-OVERFLOW system
AQUASTOP system

ANTI-FLOODING system
This is an electromechanical safety device which is
connected electrically in series to the solenoid
valve.

At the bottom of the appliance, a float-actioned

sensor connected to a microswitch is raised when
there is water in the bottom, and actions the safety
system. This actions a device which disconnects the
solenoid valve from the power supply, thus
interrupting the cycle.

ANTI-OVERFLOW system
This mechanical device is built into the fill solenoid
valve and connected to the IWMS.

As the water level in the sump rises, the level in the

anti-overflow chamber of the IWMS, too, will rise,
since the sump and the chamber are connected by
a tube.
If the water reaches the overflow level, it descends
through the siphon into the IWMS chamber; this
increases the pressure of the air in the chamber,
which pressurizes the system through a small tube.
This pressure actions a device which moves the
piston downwards to block the flow of water and
thus to interrupt the cycle.

AQUASTOP system
Mechanical device built into the fill hose.

This device is fitted to one end of the fill hose; its

water-tightness is assured by a hermetic seal.
In case of leakage from the fill hose (or breakage of
the hose), the water is recovered and ducted
through the outer sheath to the AQUASTOP device
in which a built-in sensor expands on contact with
the water, presses the valve downwards and
completely cuts off the flow of water.

SAFETY CONTROL SYSTEMS
(ELECTRONIC DISHWASHERS ONLY)

Special electronic (software) control routines constantly monitor the execution of the programme in order to
ensure that each of the functions is performed correctly; the control routines intervene automatically in case
of a malfunction.

In addition, the following safety systems are in operation during programme execution:

- PROGRAMME BEING EXECUTED

When the door is closed, the washing programme starts and the various selections cannot be modified.
This means that inadvertent actioning of the controls will have no effect.
During programme execution, only the "CANCEL" option can be selected.

- POWER FAILURE

In case of a power failure, the settings relative to the current programme remain in memory.
When the power supply is restored, the programme resumes automatically from the point at which it was
interrupted.

ALARMS
(ITRONIC "HL")

The intervention of one of the safety systems is signalled in the DIGIT window by an Alarm Code in the form
of a flashing letter.

If an Alarm Code is displayed in the DIGIT window while a programme is in execution, the dishwasher stops
(i.e. the cycle is interrupted) and all functions are disabled, including all the buttons with the exception of the
"ON/OFF" button.

SAFETY SYSTEM ALARM CODE

Time-out WATER FILL A

Time-out SUPPLEMENTARY FILL C

Time-out PRESSURE SWITCH "EMPTY" (waiting for correct temperature) F

Time-out TEMPERATURE SENSOR L

Time-out WATER HEATING H

Time-out PRESSURE SWITCH "EMPTY" (end of drain) P

RESET / CANCEL ALARM

To reset or cancel an alarm condition, press the "ON/OFF" button to switch off the appliance.

Press the "ON/OFF" button again; the appliance returns to the Programme Selection phase, and the washing
cycle can be re-selected.

If the fault persists, the appliance returns to the ALARM condition.

WATER FILL Time-out SITUATION

- The maximum duration of the water fill phase

is 5 minutes.

- The time-out counter starts at the beginning

of each fill phase, and ends when a "full" signal
is received from the pressure switch (1 - 3).

- If the time required for the pressure switch

to reach "full" condition (1 - 3) is more than Appliance: STOPPED
5 minutes, an alarm condition is generated.
When the door is opened:

DIGIT window: A (flashing)

LEDs: OFF

SUPPLEMENTARY FILL Time-out SITUATION

- The maximum duration of the supplementary

water fill phase after the pressure switch has
been reset is 45 seconds.

- The time-out safety system becomes operative

when the water level is reached (pressure
switch "full" 1 - 3) and remains in operation
until the subsequent drain phase.
Appliance: STOPPED
- The time-out counter starts as soon as
the pressure switch is reset to "empty" (1 - 2) When the door is opened:
and ends when the pressure switch returns
to "full" (1 - 3). DIGIT window: C (flashing)
LEDs: OFF
- If the time required for the pressure switch
to return to the "full" condition (1 - 3) is more
han 45 seconds, an alarm condition is generated.

- If more than one supplementary fill is performed

because the pressure switch returns more
than once to "empty" (1 - 2), the total duration
of the supplementary fill phases must not
exceed 45 seconds. If this occurs, an alarm
condition is generated.

PRESSURE SWITCH "EMPTY" Time-out SITUATION
(waiting for correct temperature)

Conditions:
This safety system is operative only while the
appliance is waiting for the correct temperature
to be reached (water heating phase), excluding
the drying phase.

- If the pressure switch is reset to "empty" (1 - 2)

the maximum time required to receive the "full" Appliance: STOPPED
signal (1 - 3) is 2 minutes.
When the door is opened:
- If the pressure switch does not return to "full"
(1 - 3) within 2 minutes, the cycle is DIGIT window: F (flashing)
interrupted and an alarm condition is generated. LEDs: OFF

- While waiting for the temperature to be

reached, the pressure switch can reset to "empty"
(1 - 2) not more than 3 times.
Any further resetting of the pressure switch
(i.e. more than 3 times) causes the cycle to be
interrupted and an alarm condition to be
generated.

TEMPERATURE SENSOR Time-out SITUATION

(interrupted / short-circuited)

- The correct operation of the temperature

sensing circuit is controlled during the water
heating phases which include a 'waiting for
temperature" phase.

- Two intervention threshholds are used:

the lower temperature threshhold is - 5°C;
the upper threshhold is 85°C approx. Appliance: STOPPED

- If the temperature is not within the limits When the door is opened:
defined by the two threshholds, an alarm
condition is generated. DIGIT window: L (flashing)
LEDs: OFF

WATER HEATING Time-out SITUATION

- The maximum duration of the water heating phase

is 45 minutes, irrespective of the temperature
for the selected cycle.

- The time-out counter starts at the beginning

of each water heating phase (i.e. when the
heating element switches on), and ends when
the correct temperature is reached.
Appliance: STOPPED
- If the time required for the water to reach
the correct temperature is more than 45 minutes, When the door is opened:
an alarm condition is generated.
DIGIT window: H (flashing)
- During the final drying phase (after the last LEDs: OFF
hot rinse has been drained), this safety time-out
is no longer operative.

PRESSURE SWITCH "EMPTY" Time-out SITUATION

(end of drain phase)

- At the end of each drain phase, it is checked

that the pressure switch is in the "empty"
condition (1 - 2).

- If the pressure switch is in the "full" condition

(1 - 3) at the end of the drain phase,
an alarm condition is generated.
Appliance: STOPPED

When the door is opened:

DIGIT window: P (flashing)

LEDs: OFF

TROUBLE-SHOOTING

CHECKING THE EFFICIENCY OF THE COMPONENTS

For the trouble-shooting procedure, the modular wiring connector fitted to the base of the appliance can be
used (after removing the connector from the socket) to measure the resistance and thus the efficiency of the
various components fitted to the appliance. To do this, a standard tester is used.

A VERIFICATION PROCEDURE has been created in order to identify the component to be tested; the test
points to which the tester probes should be applied for each component are described below, together with
the correct resistance values.

TRADITIONAL DW ITRONIC DW
(ELECTROMECHANICAL TIMER) (ELECTRONIC TIMER)

TEST CORRECT VALUE TEST

POINTS (OHMS) POINTS

DRAIN MOTOR 1-8 70 ±7% 1-8 DRAIN MOTOR

WASH MOTOR 3-8 48 ±7% 3-8 WASH MOTOR
REGENERATION SOLENOID 4-7 2450 ±8% 4-7 REGENERATION SOLENOID
FILL SOLENOID + ANTI-FLOOD 5-9 3800 ±8% 5-8 FILL SOLENOID + ANTI-FLOOD
RESET SOLENOID 6-7 4850 ±8% 6-7 RESET SOLENOID

N.B. If the resistance across contacts 1 - 8 and 3 - 8 is the same (28 ohm approx.), this means that the
capacitor is short-circuited.
