TOPIC: Addition and Subtraction of Whole Numbers

Grade Level: Grade 3

Objectives: At the end of the session, the learners will be able to:
1. Perform addition and subtraction of whole numbers ranging from
10,000 to 100,000.
2. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of whole
numbers in real-life contexts.
Engage Flashcards
• The teacher will display flashcards with simple addition and
subtraction problems involving 5-digit numbers (e.g., 34,567
+ 12,345 = ?, 76,542 - 23,876 = ?).
• Students will be asked:
“What is the answer to this problem?”
“What strategy did you use to solve it?”
“Why is it important to know how to work with large
numbers?”
Real-Life Connection:
The teacher will briefly explain the relevance of addition and
subtraction in everyday life, such as:
Managing savings and expenses.
Calculating distances traveled or remaining.

Explore Activity 1: Complete the Equation

 The teacher will write incomplete equations on the
board for students to solve:
o Example:
 65,432 + ___ = 78,954
 90,765 - ___ = 45,230
 Students will work in pairs to find the missing numbers
and complete the equations.
 Encourage students to share their solutions and explain
how they get it.

Activity 2: Create Your Own Problem

 In pairs, students will create addition and subtraction
problems involving 5-digit numbers based on real-life
scenarios by pair, such as:
Budgeting: "I have ₱67,890. I bought a new phone
for ₱12,345. How much money do I have left?"

Travel: "I already traveled 45,678 kilometers. I still

need to travel 23,456 kilometers to reach my
destination. How far will I travel in total?"

 Students will exchange problems with another pair to

solve.
 Allow students to use drawings or objects to represent
their problems.

Explain Facilitate Discussions

 The teacher will choose an output problem created by
student and write the problems and solutions on the
board.
 Ask guiding questions:
“How did you solve this problem?”
“What strategy did you use?”
“Did you encounter any challenges? How did you
overcome them?”
Introduce Concepts
 Define key terms with examples:
Addition: Combining numbers to find the total.
Example:
34,567 + 23,456 = 58,023
Subtraction: Taking one number away from
another to find the difference. Example:
67,890 - 12,345 = 55,545
 Explain (carrying) and borrowing with clear, step-by-step
demonstrations.
 The teacher will emphasize relationship between
addition and subtraction:
Example:
If 45,678 + 12,345 = 58,023, then 58,023 -
12,345 = 45,678.
Link Concepts
 The teacher will facilitate solving sample word problems
as a class, showing how to translate real-life scenarios
into equations:
“Maria saved ₱78,432. She spent ₱12,345 on a
new phone. How much money does she have
left?”
“The library recorded 45,678 visitors in January
and 34,567 in February. How many visitors did it
receive in total?”

Elaborate Problem-Solving Worksheet

-  The students will write their solutions on paper.
1. Part 1: Solve the Problems
Solve equations with and without regrouping or
borrowing:
1. 56,432 + 23,456 = ___
2. 90,765 - 67,432 = ___
3. 123,456 + 78,543 - 45,678 = ___
2. Part 2: Word Problems
Examples:
1. “John’s school collected 65,432 pesos
for a fundraiser. They spent 12,345
pesos on supplies. How much is left in
the fund?”
2. “The company sold 34,567 units in
January and 45,678 units in February.
How many units were sold in total?”

Evaluate Matching Game

 The students will be divided into 5 groups.
 The teacher will prepare cards with equations.
 The students will match the correct answer to each
question.
 Turn it into a fun competition where the group with the
group with most correct matches wins a snack.

(e.g., 56,789 + ___ = 78,901) and answer cards (e.g., 22

112, 12 345)
