HP). This means you can access your information saved within Evernote virtually anywhere: laptop, a friends computer, school library or on your phone.

The Art of Researching Part One:

Researching is probably one of the most common things college students are required to undertake. It also is something that comes with quite a few complications and questions. However, there are tons of helpful and ubiquitous techniques, skills and methods that can help you land an A+ on your next paper. While gathering some research on how to research, I realized there was a lot of information on the writing of the paper, but not very much on the actual collection of the information and data. Ive decided to compile some helpful tips combined with my expertise to create a series of articles. Each article will illustrate a different aspect of researching: Collecting, Organizing and Annotating Information Searching the Internet for Content What to Use to Compose Your Research Paper In one of my classes, we were talking about research papers and how exactly they should be done. This topic inspired an idea for me: techniques that every college student should know about and use when researching content on the web. Im not going to go so much into the format of the paper that is a different subject. Along with providing helpful techniques throughout this article, I will introduce different tools to help you get the job done right. Some are browser extensions, others are websites, but all are free, trustworthy and essential tools in researching to help you easily collect and organize all your resources no matter what the project is. The Tools

with Diigo is stored in the cloud, all the highlights and sticky notes will stay on the page when you revisit, even from a different computer or device. The other tools offered by Diigo work nicely with the Evernote Web Clipper and/or the Diigo browser add-on. Read Later, like the name implies, allows you to easily save pages to read later. Quick Note is a small extension where you can make a note and title it. Awesome Screenshot allows you take a picture of your screen. It even has a few tools to edit the image such as cropping, adding text or adding shapes to emphasize a certain part of the picture. All of the information and content retrieved or created with these tools can be saved in the cloud in what Diigo calls My Library. you can quickly find them when searching. The Diigo browser add-on has many more features than Evernote. The two really arent comparable. Diigo allows you to save your information in many ways. You can highlight specific bits of a web page to save and remember for later. You can also capture the page as an image or bookmark it as a link. You can also add sticky notes to any area of the web page. Because all the information you collect Conclusion Now that Ive covered the tools and techniques to save your research, the next issue will cover organizing your information that youve collected. If you have any questions or comments concerning what Ive talked about, please contact me at aaron.r.couch+AggieUp@gmail.com or leave a note on the Aggie Up Facebook page.

Diigo is a cloud-based information management system, much like Evernote. It provides you with tools in all major web browsers, Android, iPad and iPhone to help you collect and access a variety of information. Diigo differs from Evernote though, in that it allows you to add highlights, sticky notes and annotations to web pages, as well as doing many other things. Both tools are great to use cohesively. Diigo also has three other helpful tools that allow you to collect information freely on the web. These browser extensions are called: Read Later, Quick Note and Awesome Screenshot, all of which are available for Firefox and Chrome (Awesome Screenshot also works in Safari). Saving Your Hard-Earned Research One problem with researching online is storing and saving all your resources. It can be a huge pain and has happened to the best of us: You are working on a computer in the library and find some awesome sources. Then you forget to write them down so that when you go to work on your laptop, you have to redo all that work finding those sites. Or you email yourself links, which works alright at first, until you have to sift between all the forwards from your Aunt Betsy, spam from Viagra and those stupid newsletters you have yet to unsubscribe from. There are some much more effective ways to save this information and two services excel in this area: Diigo and Evernote. Both Diigo and Evernote offer additional browser extensions for all major browsers. Evernotes is called Evernote Web Clipper. The Web Clipper automatically detects an article and clips only that text. You can then save it to specific Notebooks in Evernote and also title and tag your notes. Tagging is useful to categorize your notes so that

Evernotes slogan is remember everything and it helps you do just that. It is completely free, although there is an upgradeable version with a few more extras. Evernote comes in the form of a web app (which is simply an application in website form that can only be accessed via the Internet), desktop application for Apple and Windows, and smartphone and tablet apps for virtually every mobile operating system: Android (Google), iOS (Apple), Blackberry, Windows Phone 7 (Microsoft) and WebOS (Palm/
