India, get ready for the power to fly! intro SpiceJet is a low-cost airline headquartered in Gurgaon, India.[2] It began serv ice in May 2005 and by 2008, it was India's second-largest low-cost airline in t erms of market share.[3] SpiceJet operates 274 flights daily to 32 Indian cities . Spicejet's fleet consists of 26 Boeing 737-800, 6 Boeing 737-900ER and 7 Bomba rdier Dash 8 Q400 aircraft. SpiceJet provides a wide range of customer services on board such as catering. A maximum of 20 kg of baggage is allowed per paying p assenger. SpiceJet allows customers to earn reward points and cash back offers a s they book using their SpiceJet State Bank of India Master Card. Each of SpiceJ et's employee is trained to behave in a smart, friendly and efficient manner so that they ensure every passenger feels welcome and looked after. However, servic

es has been riddled by delays. Some passengers have been left stranded after rep eated delay announcements followed by abrupt cancellations. According to reports , more than 17,480 passengers of Spicejet have been affected by delays of more t han two hours in January 2011 alone. In December 2011, a major runway collision at Chennai Airport was averted as a Kingfisher Airlines' ATR 72 aircraft was sto pped from taking off. SpiceJet was voted as the best low-cost airline in South A sia and Central Asia region by Skytrax in 2007.[4] SpiceJet was also voted the b est low-fare airline in India by Hindustan Times' Monitoring and Research System s (MaRS) in 2009 for its focused commitment to passenger comfort and satisfactio n. SpiceJet was reported to be far ahead of other low-cost carriers in India lik e IndiGo, JetLite, Kingfisher Red and GoAir and also full service carriers like Jet Airways and Kingfisher.[5] Services In order to keep the fares low and affordable, SpiceJet offers an assortment of vegetarian/non-vegetarian sandwiches, cookies, flavored nuts, soft drinks and ju ices as a buy-on-board option. As a low-cost carrier, SpiceJet offers only compl imentary mineral water to passengers on board its flights. SpiceJet also allows food to be carried on board. However, the food should be cold snacks, non-alcoho lic drinks, snack bars and biscuits. Messy, oily or smelly food items are not al lowed on board.[28] Per Spicejet Baggage rules, a maximum of 20 kg of baggage is allowed per paying passenger. However, international passengers can carry 2 bag s weighing nothing more than 23 kilograms each. The cost of carrying excess bagg age is Rs 100 per kg for a one-way trip. Also, the weight of the cabin baggage s hould not be exceeding 10 kg. The size of the cabin baggage is as of now, 55 cm + 35 cm + 25 cm. Cabin baggage is not allowed in flights connecting the Indian s tate of Jammu and Kashmir.[29] SpiceJet allows customers to earn reward points a nd cash back offers as they book using their SpiceJet State Bank of India Master Card which was recently introduced by SpiceJet in collaboration with the State Bank of India and Mastercard. They also provide Insurances Air Accident Insuranc e, Delayed Flight Insurance, and Lost Baggage Insurance.[30] Despite no in-fligh t entertainment, SpiceJet provides an in-flight magazine named SpiceRoute. Since August 2009, Maxposure Media Group has been printing and publishing the magazin e.[31] Pricing policy The price policy of SpiceJet is usually very dynamic, with discounts and tickets in promotion. Like other carriers, even if the advertised price may be very low , it often does not include charges & taxes. As many as ten percent of the seats on any flight are offered at the lowest price, and are the first to sell. The p rices steadily rise thereafter to a point where they can be comparable or more e xpensive than a flight on a full-service carrier like Air India. Aircraft often operate with a minimum set of optional equipment, further reducing costs of acqu isition and maintenance, as well as keeping the weight of the aircraft lower and thus saving fuel. Pilot conveniences may be excluded such as ACARS and autothro ttle. Often, no in-flight entertainment systems are made available. SpiceJet oft en offers simpler fare scheme, such as charging one-way tickets half that of rou nd-trips. Typically fares increase as the plane fills up, which rewards early re servations. Often, SpiceJet flies to smaller, less congested secondary airports and/or fly to airports in off-peak hours to avoid air traffic delays and taking advantage of lower landing fees. SpiceJet tends to offload, service and re-load the aircraft (turnaround) in shorter time periods, allowing maximum utilization of aircraft. [edit] Common practices SpiceJet operates aircraft configured with a single passenger class, and most op erate just a single type of aircraft. The fleet consists of smaller, newer, more fuel efficient aircraft, commonly the Boeing 737 families, reducing training an

d servicing costs. SpiceJet has a disinclination to handle Special Service passe ngers, for instance by placing a higher age limit on unaccompanied minors[32] th an full service carriers. SpiceJet offers no refunds or transfers to later fligh ts in the event of missed flights; if the aircraft leaves on time without a pass enger who arrived late, he will have to buy a wholly new ticket for the next fli ght. [edit] SpiceJet Cargo Along with passenger services, SpiceJet also offers cargo services on the same f light. The service is available on flights connecting Ahmedabad, Agartala, Bagdo gra, Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Goa, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Ko chi, Kolkata, Madurai, Mumbai, Pune and Visakhapatnam. Between 2 to 3.5 tons of cargo is ferried on each flight ensuring maximum utilization of the aircraft.[33 ] [edit] QR/Spicy codes Since February 2012, SpiceJet has been publishing QR codes or Quick Response Cod es under the name Spicy Codes on their Facebook page. Indian air travelers are a llowed to use this code while booking on the SpiceJet website. The codes can eas ily be scanned using a QR reader on Smartphones. The general form of a SpiceJet QR code is SGDISXXX where XXX are numbers and are frequently updated by the airl ine. The numbers denote the discount that is given per ticket while booking onli ne. Discounts range from INR100 (US$2.2) to INR800 (US$17.6).[34] [edit] Awards and Achievements SpiceJet has won the following awards for its excellent service across the India n airspace.[35] * Smart Travel Asia s Top 5 Best Budget Airlines in Asia (Aug 2010) and in Top 10 list for 2 consecutive years (Aug 2008 & Sept 2009, Hong Kong) * Outlook Traveler s Best Low Cost Airline (Feb 2008 & Feb 2010) * Award for Best Website at World Low Cost Airlines Asia Pacific Conference (J anuary 2010, Singapore) * India s best low-fare airline in a survey conducted by MaRs on behalf of Hin dustan Times (December 2009) * World Travel Market Award for multi-channel approach in distribution (Nove mber 2009, London) * National Award (ICWAI) for excellence in Cost Management (March 2009) * CIO 100 Award for IT efforts for customer satisfaction and business growth (2007, 2008, 2009 & 2011) [edit] Revenue Revenue by year Year 2000 steady INR5.37 2001 increase 2002 increase 2003 decrease 2004 increase 2005 decrease 2006 increase 2007 increase 2008 increase 2009 increase 2010 increase 2011 increase aviation intro The Aviation industry in India encompasses a wide range of services related to a ir transport such as passenger and cargo airlines, unscheduled service operators Trend Total Income Reference million (US$118,140) [36] INR16.32 million (US$359,040) [37] INR37.6 million (US$827,200) [38] INR16.08 million (US$353,760) [39] INR41.46 million (US$912,120) [40] INR38.7 million (US$851,400) [41] INR4,531.47 million (US$99.69 million) [42] INR7,482.79 million (US$164.62 million) INR14,385.79 million (US$316.49 million) INR18,819.79 million (US$414.04 million) INR22,420.91 million (US$493.26 million) INR29,606.04 million (US$651.33 million)

--- private jets and helicopters, airport management, and support services like Maintenance, Repairs and Overhaul (MRO), ground handling, in-flight catering, a nd training. The Aviation sector has reaped massive benefit from the entry of private carrier s, especially from those of the low fare ones. The growth of the airlines sector has caused a sharp upturn in demand for allied services including MRO, ground h andling, and catering services. The booming aviation industry, along with its te rtiary services, has wreaked a major talent crunch, boosting opportunities for t raining service providers. The ever-expanding Indian economy and increased deman d for trade has pushed the need for air cargo services to a new high. Increasing number of entrants in the sector has forced airports to expand their cargo hand ling capacities. The aviation sector is still a small part of the travel and transportation servi ces sector in India. 2006-07 posted annual passenger traffic of about 96 million , as compared to nearly 6 billion passengers carried by the railways. The indust ry has already bumped into several challenges; inadequate infrastructure being t he most crucial. The airlines suffered losses of around USD 500 million in 200607 and the situation is expected to deteriorate in 2007-08. The high cost of ope rations, intense competition, and unsustainably low fares have contributed to th ese losses. While initiatives have been taken to remove bottlenecks to growth, a need for further investments in capacity is felt more than ever. A recent spate of mergers, however, has come to some relief. The decelerating profit margin does not entail a slump in revenue generation. It is the increasing costs that have thrown the aviation industry into the present plight. India s aviation sector stands up to the crisis and races against its fas test growing global competitors. Improved affordability and connectivity add to the expected improvement in both passengers and cargo traffic. Large public and private investments in air travel infrastructure, supported by government initia tives, are expected to pour in.
