Short Vowels (Harakaat)

The meaning of Harakaat:


It is the plural of the Arabic word Harakah and it means
Movement

Types of Harakaat:-

There are three types of Harakaat (Vowels)

First: Fat-hah

The way it is written :

Above the letter
Example: =
The way of pronunciation:

Fat-hah is pronounced by separating the two jaws and opening the
mouth.

Second: Kasrah

The way it is written :

Below the letter
Example: =

The way of pronunciation:

Kasrah is pronounced by dropping the lower jaw.

Third: Dhammah

The way it is written :

Above the letter
Example: `=
The way of pronunciation:
Dhammah is pronounced by rounding the two lips completely without
letting them come into a complete contact.


The Qualities to be considered for the Arabic
letters with the Harakat

The heavy letters (.' =,-)

This group of Letters is always heavy when pronounced with
Fat-hah, kasra and Dhammah.

The relatively heavy letters ) _.| ,,| (

This group of letters is pronounced heavy with Fat-hah or
Dhammah. But when it comes with Kasrah it is slightly heavy.

The letter Raa ()
It is pronounced heavy .- when it comes with Fat-hah or
Dhammah. When it comes with Kasrah, it should be pronounced
light ,- .









Practice saying the Alphabet in the following chart with the
Harakat Fatha-ah, Kasrah and Dhammah considering the qualities
of the letters mentioned above.
