NETWORK DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Selected Business: Local Small Business, a Computer Shop
Network Topology: Hybrid Topology
To effectively analyze the current network infrastructure of Big Fish Internet Cafe,
data collection focused on user traffic patterns, bandwidth usage, and device
performance. Network monitoring tools were deployed to capture metrics such as
average connection speed, latency, and user session durations. Data revealed peak
usage times and identified bandwidth bottlenecks, particularly during evenings and
weekends when demand surged. The existing setup includes a single server that
manages user accounts and internet access, alongside two switches that distribute
the network load across 40 workstations. An analysis of these parameters highlighted
the need for network optimization to ensure consistent performance and reliability.
Additionally, user feedback indicated a desire for faster connection speeds and
improved service quality. This data-driven approach provides a foundation for
informed decision-making in the subsequent phases of network design and
enhancement.
A) Network Topology
The diagram depicts a bus topology network. A central switch (labeled
"Access Point 2") connects
to numerous devices. This design facilitates centralized management and
simplifies troubleshooting.
The network appears to be a Local Area Network (LAN).
B) Network Devices
• 3 Central Switch/Hub: "Access Point 2" acts as the central connection point.
• 40 Client Computers (PCs): 40 PC-PT devices are shown connected to the
central switch.
• 1Servers: One Server-PT (Server0) is connected to the central switch.
• 1 Laptop: One Laptop-PT (Laptop0) is connected to the central switch.
• 2 Printer: 2 Printer PC-PT (Printer1, Printer2) is connected to the central
switch.
• 2 Smartphones: Two SMARTPHONE-PT devices (Smartphone0,
Smartphone1,) are connected to the central switch.
• 1 Router: One Router-PT (Wireless Router0) is connected to the central
switch, suggesting a connection to a wider network.
• 2 PC Admin: Two Pc-PT devices ( PCAdmin1, PCAdmin2) are connected to
the central switch.
• 1 Access Point: An access point makes a wired network accessible to
wireless devices and enhances the performance, range, and security of a
wireless network.
C) Network Cabling
The diagram doesn't specify cabling type, but it's implied that each device is
connected to the central switch via individual cables (likely Ethernet).
D) Network Traffic Patterns and Usage Statistics
Without further information, specific traffic patterns can only be inferred. The
presence of multiple PCs suggests high traffic during peak hours. The
inclusion of smartphones and tablets indicates significant wireless traffic. The
server likely handles a large portion of the network traffic.
E) Network Performance Metrics
Performance metrics (latency, bandwidth utilization, packet loss) would need
to be monitored using network management tools to be determined. However,
the bus topology generally offers good performance, provided the central
switch has sufficient capacity.
NETWORK SIMULATION AND ANALYSIS
Network simulation was conducted using specialized software to model Big Fish
Internet Cafe's existing infrastructure. This simulation allowed us to visualize network
performance under varying load conditions, helping to identify potential failure points
and inefficiencies. Scenarios were created to simulate peak user activity, testing the
server's capacity to handle simultaneous connections while maintaining optimal
speed and responsiveness. Results indicated that while the current setup performs
adequately under normal conditions, it struggles under heavy load, leading to
increased latency and user dissatisfaction. Key performance indicators such as
throughput, packet loss, and response time were assessed to gauge network health.
The analysis underscored the importance of upgrading hardware, optimizing
configurations, and implementing load balancing solutions to enhance overall
performance. Recommendations will focus on scaling the network to meet user
demands without sacrificing service quality.

V. NETWORK DESIGN PROPOSAL
The proposed network design for Big Fish Internet Cafe aims to address the
identified shortcomings while preparing for future growth. Recommendations include
upgrading to higher-capacity switches and server hardware, implementing a robust
firewall for enhanced security, and adopting network management software for real-
time monitoring. The design will feature a star topology to facilitate efficient data
transmission and easy troubleshooting. A VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network)
configuration is proposed to segregate traffic, ensuring that high-bandwidth activities
do not disrupt general usage. Additionally, implementing a load balancing system will
enhance e source allocation, ensuring seamless performance during peak hours. The
design also includes provisions for future expansion, such as additional workstations
and mobile access points. By prioritizing scalability and reliability, the new network
infrastructure will position Big Fish Internet Cafe to better serve its community.
VI. CONCLUSION
The IT infrastructure design case report for Big Fish Internet Cafe highlights the
essential need for a robust and efficient network to meet the demands of a growing
user base in Arguelles, Panabo City. Through careful data collection and analysis, we
identified critical areas for improvement, including network performance and security.
The proposed upgrades and enhancements will not only resolve current challenges
but also future-proof the cafe’s operations as technology continues to evolve. By
adopting a proactive approach to network management and investing in quality
equipment, Big Fish Internet Cafe can enhance user experience and satisfaction,
reinforcing its role as a community anchor for digital connectivity. This commitment to
excellence will ensure the cafe remains a preferred destination for internet services in
the region.
VII. APPENDICES
The appendices will include supplementary data supporting the findings and
recommendations presented in this report. These will encompass detailed charts and
graphs illustrating network performance metrics, and visual representations of the
proposed network topology. Additional documentation will feature equipment
specifications for the recommended hardware upgrades, including server and switch
models, and estimates of associated costs. The appendices will also outline potential
implementation timelines and steps for staff training to ensure a smooth transition to
the new infrastructure. These supporting materials will provide stakeholders with
comprehensive insights into the proposed changes and their anticipated impact on
Big Fish Internet Cafe’s operations.
Figure 1. Company’s Existing Network Design
A hierarchical star topology is used in Big Fish Internet Cafe's computer shop. This
kind of topology is used by the internet café because it is scalable, dependable, and
simple to maintain, which makes it an economical and successful option for
businesses. This is relevant if there is cleaning or maintenance to be done around
the computer shop. Each device in the hierarchical star topology network design is
connected separately to a hub or switch in the middle. Direct communication between
every device and the hub is made possible by this central hub, which acts as the
main hub for data transfer. This centralized structure's ease of use facilitates fault
diagnosis and network management, making troubleshooting simple. Furthermore,
adding or removing devices without interfering with the general functionality of the
network is made possible by the hierarchical star architecture.
Figure 2. Proposed Network Design
The requirement for a more durable and adaptable network is what led to the
suggested switch to a star topology. The decentralized nature of the star topology is
anticipated to improve reliability, especially under difficult circumstances. A
methodical approach that includes assessment, device purchase, cabling upgrades,
configuration, testing, training, and progressive rollout is outlined in the
implementation plan. Hardware, installation, testing materials, training sessions, and
backup plans are important cost factors. By making this strategic change, Big Fish
Internet Cafe hopes to fortify itself against any disruptions, guarantee a steady and
dependable online experience for patrons, and establish itself as a leader in internet
connectivity.
