I. Introduction (Nature of Business/ Services Offered)

An Internet café, also known as a cybercafé, is a place which provides Internet access to

the public, usually for a fee. These businesses usually provide snacks and drinks, hence the café

in the name. The fee for using a computer is usually charged as a time-based rate. Apart from

travellers, in many developing countries Internet cafés are the primary form of Internet access for

citizens as a shared-access model is more affordable than personal ownership of equipment

and/or software. A variation on the Internet café business model is the LAN gaming center, used

for multiplayer gaming.

One of the internet shops which are known near the institution’s perimeter is the

BARRACKS Internet Café. Its business started last 2016. With over 39 PC Clients, this internet

café has been serving students of different programs from different universities in Metro Manila.

The internet café also has 2 more branches in Pasay, Metro Manila and Los Baños, Laguna.

BARRACKS Internet Café offers rental of PC for Php 20.00/hr. and printing of documents both

colored and B&W. For printing of documents, the rates are Php1.00 for B&W and the colored

documents depends on how big the picture is. The shop also consists of different online games,

LAN games, MS tools, and browsing tools. Like other modern internet Cafés, BARRACKS also

operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

II. Existing Computer Network

Network Architecture (Peer Network or Client/Server)

The café uses the client and server architecture where clients or workstations

request data and services stored on the server. Also, in using this architecture, the

administrator is allowed to manipulate and manage the workstations remotely.

Physical and Logical Topology

Physical Topology

The physical topology of the café offers only wired connection although the

network is capable of wireless connection but only available for the owner itself to limit the

internet connection speed. The wired connection is used in managing the workstations and

printing documents.

Barracks Internet Cafe 5
Barracks Internet Cafe Information Technology (ITE 002A)

The Internet Service Provider of the café is PLDT FIBr and an internet

connection plan of DSL at 12mbps. According to the owner of the café the reason he

chose PLDT as his ISP is that the connection of it is quite good in their area. The router

provided by the ISP offers the most convenient way in configuring favorable network

setup and most common service provider in internet cafés.

Connectivity Devices

The café uses a 2x24-port switch in managing the whole network system which

is connected to the router provided by their ISP. The network is configured in wired and

wireless connections.

Transmission Media

The café offers only a wired connection for their clients dedicated for gaming

and other services offered by the café. Also, they configured the network in a wireless

connection for the handheld devices of the owner of the café.

Security Policy

Hardware

Clients are allowed to connect their flash drives to the workstations in

reading or writing of their data since unit itself will not be harmed because of

the software deepfreeze, which restores the operating system to its original

state.

Software

One of the features of the café it uses Ezlink as their personal account

verification system for the workstations wherein users can use their PCs by

simply logging in to their account registered with BARRACKS. The account is

prepaid which means the client must cash-in money in order to extend their

use. The server can also manipulate the workstations if something happens

that the client doesn’t know what to do. Also, the clients are allowed to do

manipulations and they can even delete their files or data on the workstations.

Upon rebooting the unit, the files or data that been previously save by the client

will be lost due to the software installed deepfreeze to protect the workstations

from viruses and malwares.

Physical Topology

Figure 3-7. Star Topology

______________________________________________________________________________
Barracks Internet Cafe 12
Barracks Internet Cafe Information Technology (ITE 002A)

The ‘Barracks Cyber Café’ uses a star topology for its network. The network

system was installed using “EZ-Link Billing Management System”, a network system

that manages the accounts of the clients or membership system, billing, and time of

usage and access rights of the client, etc. It can also help in inventory system, to make

ease of financial calculations from the clients’ bill. It also has client security features that

prevent hackers or any unauthorized access beyond the admin.

The star topology consists of all of the nodes on a network connected to a

central switch or hub. A node is a device attached to the network - such as a computer.

Each node on the network has a cable back to the central switch. If one cable fails to a

node, only that node (computer) is affected. You can combine several switches or hubs

to create several stars, all connected together. In the subject’s case, the EZ Link Device

serves as the server and one computer as an admin for the whole café.

IV. Observation of the Existing Computer Network

Network Architecture

The Barracks Café consists of server PC and client PC. Server PC which monitors

and controls the entire client PC. The client must first notify the server to be able to access

a PC and the server will open the requested PC using EZlink.

Topology

The Barracks Café consists of fourty PC including one server PC. Barracks Café

uses two switches and one router. Two switches are connected to the router and both

switches divided the PC connection to gain internet access. Café uses wired connection

because the location of internet shop is not much exposed or couldn’t get enough signals if

they use wireless

Computer Specification

Server PC

For the Server PC’s of Barracks Café, they used Windows 7 Professional as their

OS, Zlink as their timer and both of them are using AVR. One server PC is used for the

timer and monitoring of clients and another server PC is used for printing of documents.

Client PC

For the Client PC’s of Barracks Café, they used Windows 7 Professional as their

OS, Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 – 7100 CPU @3.9Ghz, MSI H110M mother board, 4GB. For

the games they offered both LAN and Online Games. LAN games composed of CS,

Warcraft, GTA, Battle Realms, NBA2k15, and etc. Online games composed of Dota2,

LOL, Crossfire, and etc.

Internet Connectivity

The Barracks Café service provider is PLDT MyDSL 12mbps. They used PLDT

because they depend of the signal and their location. Using PLDT they have a good signal

which gives them good connection of internet. They also used two switches which are

connected to the router.

Connectivity Devices

Barracks Café uses two 24 ports switches they came up with this connection to

avoid traffic of requests. Two switches are connected to the HUB which is the internet

provider.

______________________________________________________________________________
Barracks Internet Cafe 15
Barracks Internet Cafe Information Technology (ITE 002A)

Transmission Media

The Barracks Café uses wired connections which composes of Network cable 10

meters and RJ45. Barracks Café only offered wired connection because they focus of PC

connections rather than WI-FI.

Security Policy

Barracks Café does not focus on the security of their PC. They let users access

PC freely where they can insert whatever they want. Barracks Café only depend on their

application Deep Freeze which plays an important role in their shop.

V. Observation of the Existing Layout

Floor Plan

Our observation on the existing floor plan of Barracks Cafe is that they have thirty-

nine (39) units for the client and one unit for the server, also, they have four tables. On the

first table, there are 10 clients, on the second table, there are 14 clients, while on the third

table, there are 3 clients, and lastly, on the fourth table, there are 12 clients.

Electrical Layout

The outcome of our observation about the existing electrical layout of Barracks

Café is that they used AVR for each PC and all of it are directly connected on the main

power supply.

Physical Topology

The ‘Barracks Cyber Café’ uses a star topology for its network. The network

system was installed using “EZ-Link Billing Management System”, a network system that

manages the accounts of the clients or membership system, billing, and time of usage and

access rights of the client, etc. It can also help in inventory system, to make ease of

financial calculations from the clients’ bill. It also has client security features that prevent

hackers or any unauthorized access beyond the admin.

Network Layout

The concept of Barracks Café network layout consists of internet to switch then

connected to server pc as well as the clients pc.

VI. Proposed Computer Network

In this chapter, we thoroughly discussed about whether there is a need for a change with

the specifications of the server’s and client’s PC along to the overview of the Barracks

infrastructure, the transmission media or connection and the security policies implemented by

the existing computer shop and its related network. But, if they plan to add more client PCs,

they also need to upgrade their internet connection speed.

Network Architecture

We proposed to change the specifications of the client pc and the server pc for the

better performance of it because we need a high-end server to handle the 39 clients of

Barracks Café and for the client specification is the performance of it in every game mostly the

latest game being released and this is not for temporary the specifications of it was for future

upgrades or for the future games.

Topology

For the topology we would like to use what topology they have one router and two pieces

switch with 2x24 ports. Two switches are connected to the router and both switches divided the PC

connection to gain internet access. Barracks Café uses wired connection because the location of

internet shop is not much exposed or couldn’t get enough signals if they use wireless.

Computer Specification
______________________________________________________________________________
Barracks Internet Cafe 17
Barracks Internet Cafe Information Technology (ITE 002A)

Server PC

The hardware could handle at least all their clients and simultaneously monitor

each PC. The software of the server should have an access to its clients and have the

power to limit and control its operations.

Client PC

The hardware could handle at least all the installed software in the PC and it does

not affect the performance of its server. Each client has anti-virus to protect the system

form unknown system failure and data lost. All of its peripherals are supported by the

Operating system and also its core components.

Internet Connectivity

For the internet connectivity of Barracks Café, we didn’t change their plan of PLDT MYDSL

15mbps since the Internet Café has 39 client it was suitable enough, there are chances that the

other user use YouTube site that may cause slow internet connection to the other client as for the

resolution of it we will configure the internet router in the Quality of Service of it to limit the

uploading and downloading of it when it comes of using videos sites so the rest client will have a

good internet connection even though there are some using YouTube or other sites that may cause

buffer or streaming.

Connectivity Devices

We think that it is much better to balance the number of PCs connected on every hub

even though the hub can handle it because we believe that it will have a much better result. But,

we can also recommend to the owner of the internet café just keeping and maintaining the use

of the existing connectivity devices of the internet cafe as long as it maintains the gaming

performance and overall connectivity of the PC’s hardware and software. If they will expand or
______________________________________________________________________________
Barracks Internet Cafe 18
Barracks Internet Cafe Information Technology (ITE 002A)

will have additional PCs, they can do so since there are still available ports on the switch. They

just have to make sure that all the ports of the switches are all working properly to avoid

connection problems.

Transmission Media

We recommend that the management must properly line the wires and make sure it is

protected properly. The straight wire should not be lined on the floor where customer and

personnel can step on it. It should also be protected properly to avoid noise and connection

loss. The rj-45 should also be checked regularly since it is more prone to damage whenever the

wire is pulled. Also, as much as possible we recommend separating the network wires from the

electric wires. In addition, we recommend having a proper cable management.

Security Policy

To sustain more secured and protected computers and files, there are implemented

security measures and policies given for the client/customers, a user who will upload or paste a file

from his/her flash drive must ask for a server’s / admin’s password to continue the process or

he/she can directly approach and ask an assistance of the server person assigned on that day.

Downloading a file is strictly prohibited; there are blocked downloadable files from selected

downloading sites, YouTube converters and Torrent sites specifically. The system units also have

deep freeze, the customer should back up all the files they made because if the computer restarts

all the unbacked up files will not be restored.
