Adjectives

Adjectives are words that describe or give more information


about nouns.
Examples;
• A busy street.
• A deep sea.
• John’s handwriting is very neat.
• Peter is vey quiet today.
• It is windy.

Adjectives usually appears before the noun it describes.


Sometimes, the adjective appears after the noun or , later in the sentence.
Exercise 1
Identify the adjectives in the following sentences.

1. There is an empty room upstairs.


2. It’s a hot summer.
3. You are so kind.
4. Don’t be crazy.
5. This park is clean and green.
6. Many people exercise to keep healthy.
7. I think these eggs are rotten.
8. We are all bored. There isn’t anything to do.
9. The pupils don’t find the joke amusing.
10. James was absent because he was ill.
Adjective endings

1) –ful and – less

The “-ful” ending means having a lot of something.


Examples;
Painful – a lot of pain.
Hopeful – a lot of pain.

The “-less” ending means without.


Leafless – without leaves
Sleeveless – without sleeves.
An adjective that ends in -less is the opposite of the same
adjective that ends in -full.

2) Some adjectives end in –y
A stormy sea
A dirty street

A caring nurse.

4)Some adjectives end in –ly
A lonely boy
A weekly magazine
A friendly police officer

5)Here are some adjectives with the endings -able, -al, -en, -ible, -
ish and –ous.
A comfortable chair.
A national costume.
A broken chair.
A terrible mess.
Childish behavior.
A dangerous place.
Kinds of Adjectives
There are different kinds of adjectives.

 Some adjectives describe the qualities of nouns.

A beautiful rainbow An old house


A clever monkey A lazy boy
A difficult question A rich man.
Happy children Brilliant children
A kind lady A sad woman
 Some adjectives tell you which place or country a person or
thing comes from, or belongs to. They are called adjectives
of origin.

Australian apples A Sri Lankan woman.

A Balinese dancer Italian foods

The English language Indian temple

The French flag Nike shoes


Japanese child
 Some adjectives tell you the color of things

The sea is blue.


George is wearing brown shoes.
I don’t like green apples.
Carrots are orange.
Pink colour saree.
 Some adjectives tell you the size of the nouns they
describe
A big hat
Broad shoulders
A high mountain
A large ship
A low ceiling
A narrow path
A big car.
A thick bread.
A small bag of sugar.
Wide path
Tiny bird
 Numbers are adjectives, too. They tell you how many people, animals, or
things there are. Sometimes they are called adjectives of quantity.

One apple
Two books
Three glasses
Four cats
Five elephants.
 Other adjectives tell you something about quantity/amount
without giving you the exact number.

A little ice cream


A little rice
Many people
Too much salt
Lots of insects
Plenty of money

Is there any milk?

Identify what the kind/type of bold adjectives.

1.Dad has two pairs of shoes.


2.One pair is brown and the other pair is black.
3.This is a very simple puzzle.
4.What color is the American flag?
5.A kind fairy appeared before Cinderella.
6.He is a proud man.
7. There is some food left.
8. Tom is wearing a blue T-shirt.
9. Jack has ten marbles; Peter has twenty.
10. How many marbles have Jack and Peter altogether?
11. There is an Indian temple in the city.
12. There is a large crowd outside the temple.
13.My house is just a few miles from the school.
14. They are driving a small car.
Read the paragraph carefully, write down all the adjectives you
find.

A happy boy walked into a big park on a sunny day. He carried a


small bag. The park was quiet and green. Many children were
playing with colorful toys. A tall man sat on a wooden bench,
reading a big book. A white dog with soft fur was running around.
Beautiful flowers grew in the garden. The boy saw three red
balloons in the sky. Whose balloons were they? He picked up a
round ball from the grass and smiled.
Comparison of Adjectives
Comparative form
When you compare two people or things, use the comparative form of
the adjective.
To make the comparative form add -er to the adjective.

How to use comparative adjectives in sentences?

The word than is used with comparative adjectives.


• Jack is taller than John.
• Ravi is smarter than Mala.
• Dog is bigger than cat.
Superlative form
Use the superlative form of an adjective to compare three or
more nouns. Lots of superlatives end in -est

Dark Darker Darkest


Smart Smarter Smartest
Thick Thicker Thickest
How to use superlative form in a sentence
Add “the” before the superlative form.

Examples;
Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.
Peter is the tallest boy in his class.
With adjectives that end in -e, add -r to form the comparative, and
-st to form the superlative.

Some adjectives have only one syllable, end with a consonant,
and have a single vowel before the consonant. With these
adjectives, double the last letter before adding –er to form the
comparative, and -est to form the superlative.(Small words )

Some adjectives end with –y. with these adjectives change the y
to i. Then add -er to form the comparative, and -est to form the
superlative.

Usually adjectives with two or more syllables, or sound, We use
more and most to make comparative and superlative forms
