Episode 3 My Insights And reflections The Learning EnvironmentSubject Matter/s CoveredLibrary and/or InternetResources The learning environment wasdesigned for the needs of thestudents. In the class Iobserved, they were learningabout prevocational skills, specifically cooking. It wasdesigned to look like akitchen, but it still gives theeducational setting au ra. Tothe finest details, the edges of the counters, height of thetable, they we re all altered for the students. I also noticedhow the school used TEACCHin thei r instructional methods.Because of this, the studentsdeveloped a sense of organi zational skills in their movements. Each room has aassistant teacher or a caregi ver that assist the studentsin performing works.Overall, I very much enjoyedthe set up of the learningenvironment. It was holisticand conducive for learning. The room I observed was aprevocational room. The roomwas divided into two, one isfo r one on one instruction. The other was a kitchenwhere they teach the studentsto cook. On the time of myobservation, the studentswere chopping vegetables for the macaroni soup that will beserved for the school atrecess. Students who do notsu cceed in the task wereasked to perform a differenttask. One student who sat stil lin the chopping table waspulled out. He was given thetask to prepare the rice f or cooking.I really admire how theteachers and assistanceencourage the students tolearn these things. Tasks thatwill be useful when they goout to the society in the future. It s good to see their potentials in these areas. There are no internetre sources nor much books inthe class I observed. I dounderstand it though becausei t is not really appropriate for the class. Everything that thestudents need to l earn arehands on.However, I may suggest thatthey look for recipes in theinternet that the students cando. I found out that they makethe same soup for manyweeks now, a new recipewould be nice. Your Analysis Why should teachers know about curriculum design? It is very important that teachers know about the curriculum design because teac hersare the one who will be implementing it in the classrooms. Knowledge about t his will help themfulfill the goals that the design wants to accomplish. In my e xperience, some teachers that Iknow do not even implemente what is in the curric ulum, especially Physical Education teachers. They only ask the students to play during PE time or eat. As a result, we cram everytime theexams are approaching. They five us loads of reading materials as homeworks that will appear on the exa mination papers. By the end of the year, I wasn t able to remember what really wasth e focus of my PE subject that school year. These teachers failed to accomplish t he goal thatthe curriculum was designed for. We cannot let this happen especiall y for academic subjects.Parents do not send students to school for nothing, they expect their children to learn.Another reason why teachers should kknow about t he curriculum design is to help themplan for the instructions. If you know the o verall design, teachers can come up with specificdesigns about their lessons, ac tivties, and how to assess learning. What do most principles and theories of curriculum development have in common? H owis this commonality expressed or spelled out in the curriculum of the class yo u haveobserved? I used to have a class about curriculum design. From what I have learned, mostpr ogressive principles and theories about curruculum development revolves around the

totallearning experience and how the students are the center of learning. The curri culum, unlikebefore is designed basing on the needs of the students. It is no lo nger designed for the ease of the teacher s implementation. In the class I have obse rved, the instruction is modified for everystudents. If they think that the stud ents cannot catch up with their classmates in doing the sametask, they provide a nother task for this student. If a student fails to do a task because he simplyc annot do it, learning must not stop there. Bridges Foundation Inc. plans their i nstruction verycarefully, use innovative instructional techniques, and much more . All this are for the learners. They want to provide the best possible plan and design to achieve the best learning for their students.
