PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE

What is Present Continuous?


We use the Present Continuous to talk about:
• Things happening right now
• Actions happening around this time
• Temporary actions (not permanent)

1. POSITIVE FORM
Structure:
Subject + am/is/are + verb + -ing

Subject VerbBe Example


I am I am eating lunch.
He is He is reading a book.
She is She is eating dinner
They are They are cooking rice
You are You are riding a bike
We are We are cooking rice

More Examples:
• You are talking loudly.
• She is writing in her notebook.
• We are learning English.
• I am watching a movie.
• It is raining outside.

CLASSWORK
Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the verb in
brackets:
1. I __________ (read) a book.
2. She __________ (draw) a flower.
3. They __________ (play) outside.
4. We __________ (eat) lunch.

2. NEGATIVE FORM
Structure:
Subject + am/is/are + not + verb + -ing

We add not after the verb “be”.


Examples:
• I am not sleeping.
• She is not dancing.
• They are not listening.
• He is not shouting.
• We are not going to the park.

Short forms:
• is not = isn’t
• are not = aren’t

3. QUESTION FORM (INTERROGATIVE)
Structure:
Am/Is/Are + subject + verb + -ing?

Examples:
• Are you listening? → Yes, I am. / No, I’m not.
• Is she eating? → Yes, she is. / No, she isn’t.
• Am I doing it right? → Yes, you are!
