Information System
Data system: system consisting of the network of all
communication channels used within an organization.
A combination of hardware, software, infrastructure and
trained personnel organized to facilitate planning,
control, coordination, and decision making in an organization.
Evolution of Information System
The Manual Process Model
The Flat File Model
Data processing is thus performed by standalone applications rather than
integrated systems. Records follow a uniform format, and there are no
structures for indexing or recognizing relationships between records. The
file is simple and can be a plain text file.
The Database Model
Access to the data resource is controlled by a database management
system (DBMS). The DBMS is a special software system that is programmed
to know which data elements each user is authorized to access. The most
popular example of a database model is the relational model, which uses
a table-based format.
The REA Model
Resources, Events and Agents (basic data collected)
The data are collected and stores in a database that can be used to provide
reports and financial statements.
The ERP Model
Enterprise Resource Planning is an information system model that enables
an organization to automate and integrate its key business processes.
