IT PRESENTATION

Reasons for networking

Computer networking refers to the practice of connecting computers and other digital devices
together to share resources and exchange information. It involves the use of hardware and software
technologies that enable communication between computers and other devices, whether they are
located in the same physical location or are geographically dispersed.

1. Data safety opportunities are increased by computer networks. One computer may be a very
effective instrument for safeguarding private data. If the unit is offline, you can't access it
unless you're in the area and know the password. Even if you are linked to the Internet, you
may still enjoy the same advantages when you have an online network of computers. We can
all utilize this technology to raise our level of life and boost productivity without sacrificing
our privacy in this age of widespread data breaches.
2. All of the data on computer networks is consolidated onto a single data storage server.
Employees have access to this info. Utilising the data, you may learn how to raise the
production of your business. The number of storage servers required is reduced when a
central server is used. And you improve the operations' efficiency.
3. Computer networking has greatly improved the state of communication. Through
networking, you may share and receive files and text messages instantly. From every device,
information is readily available. A dependable internet connection is all you need. Even if
your smartphone goes down, you may still access your data by logging in from another
device.
4. Computer networks greatly lower your hardware expenses.Pooling of resources is effective
since the computers are connected. Workers share copiers, printers, and backup storage. By
doing this, it is no longer necessary to purchase individual IT assets for every employee. You
don't have to install applications as often as you would with a typical desktop. All you have to
do is monitor performance and apply updates.

As much as there a good reasons for networking they are some disadvantages

1. In the event that a file server on your computer network malfunctions, all of your data may
become immediately unavailable. The ability of individual units to communicate with one
another is compromised when they become isolated. Consequently, it requires more time
and effort to complete tasks each week. Managing a vast network is a complicated
procedure that, in order to optimize your chances of success, need both training and the
presence of a capable manager.
2. Your information is vulnerable to viruses and man-in-the-middle assaults because to data
servers. Corrupt files can be downloaded and shared by staff members, exposing your server
to malware and viruses. Opportunities for network security breaches are increased when
resources are shared. Hackers have no trouble interfering with your data.
3. It can cost thousands of dollars to install ordinary networking hardware. Modern routers and
other small devices are extremely pricey. Furthermore, the networks require routine
maintenance and observation. It will be necessary for you to seek expert advice.
4. When running a computer network, there are countless ways that things may go wrong. For
financial gain, hackers may infect them with malicious software and then encrypt the data
they contain, thus "kidnapping" your files. Your credit card information may be exposed if
you download a file from an email that appears authentic but is actually a trap designed to
record your keystrokes.
Types of Networks

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)

This kind of computer network uses a common communication channel throughout a city,
town, or metropolitan region to link computers over a geographic distance. With a range of 5
to 50 kilometers, this network mostly employs FDDI, CDDI, and ATM technologies. It has a
mediocre transmission speed. It is expensive and requires a lot of maintenance. Networking
in cities, towns, a single huge metropolis, a sizable space inside several buildings, etc., are
examples of MAN.
Imagine a university campus that has Wi-Fi available across all its buildings. Students can
move between classrooms, libraries, and dorms while remaining connected. This local
network exemplifies a MAN, which serves multiple connected locations within a specific
geographic area.

Advantages

 MAN offers high-speed connectivity in which the speed ranges from 10-100 Mbps.
 The security level in MAN is high and strict as compared to WAN.
 It support to transmit data in both directions concurrently because of dual bus
architecture.
 MAN can serve multiple users at a time with the same high-speed internet to all the
users.
 MAN allows for centralized management and control of the network, making it
easier to monitor and manage network resources and security.
Disadvantages

 The architecture of MAN is quite complicated hence, it is hard to design and

maintain.
 This network is highly expensive because it required the high cost to set up fiber
optics.
 It provides less fault tolerance.
 The Data transfer rate in MAN is low when compare to LANs.
Wide Area Network (WAN)

A WAN is a kind of computer network that uses a common communication channel

to link computers over great geographic distances. It spans several areas rather than
being limited to only one. Another way to describe WAN is as a collection of local
area networks that can connect with one another across a distance of more than 50
kilometers. Here, we make use of dial-up and leased-line technologies. It has a
relatively low transmission speed and is exceedingly expensive and maintenance-
intensive. The Internet is the most widely used example of a wide area network.

Adavantages

 It covers large geographical area which enhances the reach of organisation to

transmit data quickly and cheaply.
 The data can be stored in centralised manner because of remote access to data
provided by WAN.
 The travel charges that are needed to cover the geographical area of work can be
minimised.
 WAN enables a user or organisation to connect with the world very easily and allows
to exchange data and do business at global level.

Disadvantages

 Traffic congestion in Wide Area Network is very high.

 The fault tolerance ability of WAN is very less.
 Noise and error are present in large amount due to multiple connection point.
 The data transfer rate is slow in comparison to LAN because of large distances and
high number of connected system within the network.
