So Much More To Roseto In 100 Years

By The Farole Family

So much more to celebrate than 100 years! Most nights after work Danny and Janet Farole go for a walk in Roseto. Not just for maintaining good health, but to enjoy the surroundings of Roseto on those walks. On a 60 degree Monday evening Danny and Janet ventured out about 5:00pm as usual. They turned on McKinley and met up with an old friend; Michael DAmato who was outside tending to a few chickens. After some talking about old times, he graciously offered them one dozen eggs,

then one quart of homemade Vino, and also 1 lb. of Soppressata! After realizing this walk will need to be cut short due to the groceries and vino they were carrying, they said their thank yous, and goodbyes and started to walk back home. One block away on Dewey, they were approached by another Rosetan; Anthony Ruggerio, The Plumber, who handed them 2 loaves of Easter Bread. One was for a neighbor. So, as they ventured home with only one more block to go they felt so humbled and blessed to receive from

such giving people in this small town that is currently celebrating 100 years. That night Danny and Janet reminisced not only about the walk, but how also during the winter months when Danny did snow removal for numerous neighbors and what they offered. One neighbor offered desserts, Dave Capozzolo offered venison, and another neighbor, Rosa, made delectable Italian dishes that were very memorable. This thoughtfulness of so many is what makes the town of Roseto special to them.

New Colorectal Cancer Screening Test Shows Promise

(NAPSI)Colorectal cancer is the secondleading cancer killer in the U.S.1more than 143,000 people will be diagnosed with the disease and almost 52,000 will die from it this year, according to National Cancer Institute estimates. Older adults, especially, are more likely to get colorectal cancer, with about 60 percent of new diagnoses occurring in people 65 and older. Despite its high incidence, the disease is often considered the most preventable, but least prevented cancer. Colorectal cancer is highly treatable if found early, but more than 40 percent of adults age 50 and older have not been screened as recommended. However, an investigational, noninvasive, in-home screening test, developed by Exact Sciences in collaboration with Mayo Clinic, currently shows promise as a potential addition to other available screening tools for colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is highly treatable if caught early, but most patients are diagnosed with the disease in its late stages, primarily due to poor screening compliance, said Dr. Robert Hardi, gastroenterologist and principal investigator for a clinical study evaluating the Exact Sciences test. If approved, this simple, non-invasive test that accurately detects precancer and early-stage colorectal cancer may improve screening participation and help save lives. Exact Sciences investigational stool DNA test works by detecting altered DNA from precancerous or cancerous polyps in the colon. A nationwide clinical study is underway to further evaluate this screening test. Early studies have been very promising, said Dr. Hardi. Now more research is ongoing to evaluate the tests performance in a large population, especially among people 65 and older who are more likely to develop colorectal cancer. Exact Sciences is actively recruiting participants between the ages of 65 and 84 for a pivotal research study called The MultiTarget Colorectal Cancer Screening Test for the Detection of Colorectal Advanced Adenomatous Polyps and Cancer (DeeP-C). For more information about participating in the study, call (800) 949-8292 or visit www. exactsciences.com. Note, Mayo Clinic and some of the investigators associated with this research have a financial interest in the technology being studied in this research. Do you qualify for the study? Are you between the ages of 65 and 84? Are you scheduled for or do you need to schedule a screening colonoscopy? Are you willing to provide a stool sample and undergo a colonoscopy within 90 days of enrollment? If you meet these criteria, call (800) 949-8292 for more information.

Clover Rest Home Features Boutique Care for Frail Elderly

Elder care has become an issue for millions of Americans who need to look after their aging parents. The difficult decision of how to care for them leads many to facilities like Clover Rest Home. The Warren County facility has been the best kept secret for the elderly who need skilled nursing care in a comfortable individualized environment. Located along the scenic Delaware River, Clover Rest Home has been serving the region with distinction for over four decades. Around two years ago, a new management company stepped in to continue the fine tradition of service at Clover Rest Home and raise the bar and expand services. The new Administrator, Alvan Small, brings 30 years of exceptional and diverse experience in both large and small nursing homes. He has a track record of developing innovative programs and services for the elderly in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. Small explains that Clover Rest Home features Boutique Care that is unparalleled in Warren county and the surrounding counties. We never use agency nurses. All of our RNs, LPNs and CNA nurses are trained, educated and familiar with every residents care needs and desires. We make sure that every skilled staff member can serve the needs of every resident. Clover Rest Home is the essence of boutique elder care, according to Small. The 30 bed facility is smaller than many facilities and allows for intimate care. The 24/7 nursing staff know the special clinical nuances, the personal desires, and the appropriate actions that ultimately satisfies the residents. Rather than entering an impersonal institutional environment, our residents feel a warm, friendly, family-like ambiance. Whether a resident desires a different meal or has a change in health, our nursing, dietary and recreation staff can quickly accommodate without numerous forms and delays in service. We make sure that our residents do not feel a daunting and complicated atmosphere, especially when dementia or clinical aches and pains are enveloping their physical and emotional well being. Of course, we have geriatric physicians, psychiatrists, podiatrists, dentists and ophthalmologists make regular rounds at Clover Rest Home. We also have laboratory, x-ray facilities and a pharmacy to support their prescriptions and plan of care. In addition, a registered dietician oversees the menu. We emphasize a healthy meal plan for all residents, while accommodating for every for different types of diet. Clover Rest Home specializes in dementia care, respite care and long-term care. Residents have available rehabilitation services to provide for the fastest possible recovery. This includes physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. All our nurses are trained and certified in I.V. therapy, pain management and wound care says Small. This allows the resident to return to Clover if a hospitalization or a decline in health necessitates specialized care. Small smiles as he makes a point about what he calls making a decision on a facility based on cosmetic appearances. Dont be fooled by all the fancy wallpaper and chandeliers of some new facilities, says Small. He urges families to search and compare the facts by visiting www.medicare.gov. Under the drop down caption called locator, a person can search for any nursing home in the country and get the real hard core statistics evaluated by the appropriate Federal and State agencies. An easy 5 star rating system will quickly tell the reader what type of care is given by any facility. Clover Rest Home has scored 4 or 5 stars year after year. That is crucial when searching for the right nursing home for a parent or loved on, says Small. Dont be fooled by cosmetics and window dressing! The home has a social worker and full time recreation director to make sure that residents have a full array of activities, to stay occupied and happy. In addition, there are six outside entertainers visiting weekly and monthly trips to various places of interest. For example, in July, residents went to a minor leagues baseball game. They often go across the Delaware to the East Stroudsburg mall. But it seems that everyones favorite is a visit to the East Stroudsburg Sherman theatre. The staff at Clover Rest Home characterize Alvan

as very detail-oriented and impetuously insistent on attention to detail. One staffer explains, Alvan has earned numerous awards for his dedication and fine track record in the industry, and it shows in his work. At a very young age, Small earned the Young Administrator of the year award for initiating and successfully developing a child care center, an adult day care and a state of the art 120 bed addition to an existing 240 bed facility. His current staff members say that his energy and progressive thinking is infectious and that Clover Rest Home residents have benefited greatly from his efforts.

When asked about his tenure in the industry, Alvan gives credit to his staff. I am so proud and fortunate to work along side such stable, caring and dedicated staff. At Clover Rest, some of the nurses have been on staff for 15-20 years. They are an uncommon group of hard working caring professionals. Im honored to call them my colleagues. Clover Rest Home is Medicare and Medicaid certified. It is conveniently located off Interstate 80, routes 94 and 46. No appointment is necessary for a tour. To visit the best kept secret in Warren County, call 908-4964477.

Platinum Cutz Celebrates 1 Year Anniversary at New Location

By Sarah Loren

Bigger and Better was the description of the new Platinum Cutz Tattoo and Barber Shop last year. Since then, its gotten even bigger, and even better. When Adrian Ricardo

moved his barber shop from North Lehigh Avenue in Wind Gap to the Rt. 512 Plaza on Blue Valley Drive in Bangor, he also introduced a nationallyranked tattoo artist, Ken.

Were the only tattoo-barber shop in the area, Adrian said. Since last year, Ken and Adrian have increased their clientele and with that, the services they provide. Adrian still offers

barber-style cuts; hot towel, straight razor shaves; and New Yorkstyle fades and designs. Ken provides his customers with custom-designed tattoos, including realistic designs and portraits, lettering, cover ups and more. He also provides his customers with three free touch-up sessions for every tattoo received by him. But thats not all customers will find at Platinum Cutz. While waiting for their haircut or tattoo, clients can take advantage of the various sources of entertainment. The barbertattoo shop offers Fast and Furious video games, an internet jukebox, a pool table, change machine, snack and soda machines and free WiFi. Last year, Adrian said, Ive wanted to do this for a long time. Weve come a long way and Im proud to say we finally did it. Its easy for anyone to see that Ken and Adrian keep on climbing the ladder of success, as every year is an introduction to something new at Platinum Cutz. When Adrian first started cutting hair, it

was in his familys basement during high school. Now, Adrian has more than five years experience and has since become a barber instructor. Just as Adrian gains experience every time he holds a pair of scissors, Ken learns something new with every tattoo he creates. When he joined Adrian at Platinum Cutz last year, Ken had some 600 clients. Now, Kens clientele has grown to more than 800. Ken has five years experience as a tattoo artist and has been nationally-ranked. Adrian and Ken have many accomplishments

on their personal records of achievements. This time next year, it wont be a surprise if Platinum Cutz introduces something else to their customers and the community. Platinum Cutz is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11am to 8:30pm, Saturday from 10:30am to 8:30pm, and Sunday from 10:30am to 6pm. They are open on Monday and Wednesday by appointment only. Using Energy Efficient Bulbs With Dimmers

(NAPSI)Energy efficient lighting has become a top priority for homeowners looking for simple ways to save energy. Many homeowners, however, have found that switching from incandescent bulbs to energy efficient LEDs or CFLs means not being able to use their dimmer to create the same ambience as before. Most dimmers in homes today are designed exclusively for incandescent lighting. When an energy efficient bulb is installed, homeowners say, their lights flicker or dont dim as well as with less efficient, incandescent bulbs. Even when the energy efficient bulbs are listed as compatible, theres a good chance homeowners wont get the performance expected when combined with an existing dimmer. Explains Michael Neary, Levitons Product Manager for Residential Lighting Controls, The vast majority of existing home installations prior to 2011 were designed in such a way that the lighting devices are unable to effectively support dimmable LED or CFL bulbs. He believes dimming products today must meet the necessary requirements of today and tomorrows lighting advancements and work effectively with all older solutions as well. Leviton recently introduced its Universal Dimmer, which is compatible with dimmable bulbs, maximizes energy efficiency and eliminates dimming issues. Homeowners should keep an eye out for these lighting issues when using LED and CFL bulbs with incandescent dimmers: Reduction in dimming range. Dimmers are designed to help set the mood for any room. Flickering or fluttering of the bulb when dimmed to certain levels. Inconsistent performance among individual bulbs controlled by one dimmer. For more information, visit leviton.com/universal.

Mrs. Warings 4th grade class earned the most money, raising $427.29. Their efforts will be rewarded with a catered lunch party provided by The Olive Garden!
