Main idea : In this extract we can feel that something bad is going to happend. The tention raises. SCENE 1 Everything is fine, peacefull quiet. First trouble : CL. Refuse to come with Miss A. Miss A. leave the town for the day. SCENE 2 A man arrives : MM CL MM CL. Follows MM And MM goes around the town SCENE 3 MM, followed by the citizens, stops at Miss A. house and goes into her yard Everybody waits for Miss A. [] Miss A. arrives and sees MM after a while MM ignores CL. And then hits him Miss A. doesn t react, MM leaves

Marvin Macy
Physical : handsome man tall, brown curly hair, deep-blue eyes, red lips red shirt, wide belt of tooled leather, thin suitcase a a guitar half-mouthed smile (self assured not the same as with Miss A.) Knife : pocket and large MM opens it slowly and hones it on his pants Provocation, threat Open = opening of the action, folded = end of the action

Attitude (CL)

1. MM seems interested in CL (insistant STARE) 2. quickly turns his back (he s made up his mind about CL) 3. ignores him, despises him, 4. looks down on CL (contempt) GLANCE 5. insults, hits him He treats CL like an abnormal person (doesn t address him directly, asks the others, hits him)

Attitude (people) Powerful (everybody fears him) Comes to the mill, town (parade : I m back ) Self assured, ignores the crowd, apart from them Suggested threat, dangerous man End : Leaves fearless, totally self-confident, Grotesque : (image : western movie) : the bad man out of jail and outlaw who comes back to the quiet town and brings a mute anxiety.

The citizens
Reaction (mill) confusion, panic numb (feels what s going to happen) Interest : follow MM at a carefull distance Reaction (yard) fear (a bit scared, but curious !) don t know what will happen Merlie Rayan : calls him and tries to mock him but she ll be silenced Silent, quiet but not inside doesn t dare to speak or move The tension raises when Miss A. arrives They waited for a terrible reaction, they are surprised by her calm They feel uncomfortable What expect ? She sees : shout, hit him, chase him Looks at CL-MM-CL-MM-CL ! M hits CL : kill him, be really cruel and agressive Transe expression (medicin, organ)

Consider CL ? Yes : watch him sight to see. But just a protagonist between Miss A. and MM who really interests them in my opinion. They are not directly interested in CL.
