Foreword
In the heart of Delhi, a city that thrives on
opulence, the Step Maze House is tucked
away in the vibrant yet chaotic expanse
of Model Town, standing amidst the
neighborhood’s ever-persistent energy.
Designed as a labyrinth of connected
spaces, the house plays with the idea
of movement and fluidity. A unique
sequence of staircases, each treated in a
distinct way, ensures that every step offers
a new experience, as one glides from
one level to the next. This seamlessness
translates into the interconnection
achieved through volumes that bring the
family together with a sense of intimacy
at every turn.
Dressed in chic, modern interiors and
enveloped by a facade that effortlessly
invites connection, this home blurs the
line between indoors and the vibrant
street life.
It is a celebration of the contrast between
seclusion and connection, a place where
the pulse of Delhi can be felt.

Introduction
They say, ‘It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.’ But what if your home itself is an
interesting journey through spaces? Step Maze is one such experiential house that’s full of surprises.
It’s a place where you can walk up and down steps to get from one room to another. Every step you
take, you discover something new. It’s like a fun maze, but for your home!

Site Context
Nestled in the corner plot of the Model Town, a bustling neighborhood in North Delhi, the house benefits
from plenty of natural light and air, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. However, the
close proximity of buildings to the north and west presents a unique challenge. In response to these site
conditions, the planning becomes a play of volumes, strategically positioned to maximize the entry of
natural light and air, creating a bright and airy living space.

The Staggered Staircases

Central to this vision is the innovative vertical core of the house, where the staggered staircases act like a Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nullam suscipit hendrerit diam, id rutrum

Entrance Lobby
The entrance lobby is a beautiful introduction to the house, a prelude to the wonders within. The
sinuous marble clad surfaces, the curvilnear sofas, the bright colours - give a hint of the luxurious
design that awaits inside. A stunning, custom-made light fixture is the centerpiece of the room,
casting a warm and inviting light. The light reflects beautifully on the center table with brass-inlay,
creating a captivating atmosphere.

Staircase 1- A Journey of Spatial Interaction

The first staircase you encounter, takes one on a journey through the spaces of the home, visually
connecting the floors both vertically and horizontally. It connects the dramatic triple-height volume
and as one ascends from the ground floor, the cutout in the staircase grows larger, forming a massive
light well that illuminates the staircase and the surrounding courtyards. This architectural element not
only provides natural light but also creates a dynamic and visually striking experience.

Formal Living Room

The formal living room is designed to offer a unique dual perspective. One side of the room provides
a framed view of the building’s right facade through wooden louvers, offering a filtered glimpse of
the outdoors. On the opposite side, a brick jali screen filters the view of the front facade, creating a
layered and intriguing visual experience. This interplay of solid and void, light and shadow, enhances
the room’s ambiance and provides a captivating connection to the external environment.

Ground Floor Master Bedroom

The master bedroom is a serene sanctuary that offers breathtaking views of the courtyard. Large
windows frame the neighboring tree, seamlessly blending the outdoor landscape with the interior space.
This unique design choice creates a tranquil and harmonious atmosphere. Additionally, the bedroom’s
strategic placement allows for visual connections with the living area, fostering a sense of openness and
fluidity throughout the house.

Central Courtyard
The ground floor courtyard serves as a versatile space, functioning as a side balcony and a serene seating
area. The wood finish aluminum louvered openings punctuate the walls of the triple-height courtyard,
creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. However, the courtyard is seamlessly integrated with
the interior living areas, creating a more open and connected living experience.

Second Floor Master Bedroom

The elder son’s bedroom on the second floor is a harmonious blend of angular design elements. From
the angled ceiling to the intricate 3D CNC work on the stone wall, the room exudes a modern and
dynamic aesthetic. This theme is further emphasized by the wallpaper’s geometric patterns, the angular
profiles of the furniture, and the carefully selected rugs and decor pieces. The result is a cohesive and
visually striking space that reflects the son’s personality.

Privacy from exteriors

Connectivity within interior

A Balance Between Privacy and Connection

The architectural concept is rooted in the desire to maximize light and breeze from the two street-facing
sides of the plot. The design incorporates louvers and jaalis, providing both shading and privacy amidst
the dense neighborhood. The house is envisioned to be open and connected to the outdoors, allowing
an abundance of natural light, and fostering visual connectivity throughout. This design flexibility allows
the house to be both inward-looking and outward-facing, adapting to the family’s needs and moods.

44 45
www.buildofy.com Step Maze House | Spaces Architects@ka

Staircase 3- A Journey through Nature

To reach the upper terrace, one must first walk through the lawn and ascend the staircase. The
initial steps double as seating, offering a vantage point to gaze out over the neighborhood through
openable shutters. These shutters provide a sense of privacy while casting intriguing shadows.
Similarly, the steps cast their own unique shadow along the wall.

Conclusion
Step Maze is a clever blend of architecture and practicality, crafted to elevate the daily life of a
family of five while making the most of its distinctive trapezium-shaped plot. With a design that
embraces natural light, cross ventilation, and visual connectivity, the home strikes a balance
between openness and coziness. The staggered staircases in the vertical core do more than just
connect spaces—they transform the act of moving through the house into an exciting architectural
journey, adding a touch of adventure to everyday living.
