Renovation projects make one feel like trapped in the maze of

past and present. The challenge was to redefine the interior

spaces with more fluidity, openness and the exterior with

utmost simplicity, and no or minimum indication of what is

inside out of a structure.

The site is a plot of 3,485 sq ft located in Malappuram, Kerala and is surrounded by

residential houses. The vicinity is formed of traditional Kerala houses with roofs
that glorify the vernacular architecture of the state. The design of this house brings
freshness to the eyes amid the conventional cluster.

The architects were presented with two choices, to either create a new house
or refurbish the existing structure, which brought its own set of challenges. The
aesthetically unappealing spaces of the existing structure became a constraint
when compared to the client’s requirements. The choice of designing a new home
was only too obvious.

With limited requirements for the house and a family of three, the house evolved
just as the clients expected ‘simple, small and elegant’ at the same time. With
no ornamental detailing, no massive form but modest by all means the house
accentuates simplicity in respect of materials, design and minimal interiors. The
materials sustainability lies in the reuse of materials, the thermal comfort attained
and the overall energy efficiency.

Being a small plot and surrounded by residences, a front courtyard is designed along
the wall of the adjoining narrow road. The house spans horizontally and is devised
in G+1 structure. The emphasis is given on horizontal lines and thus a contrast in
the height was brought by the addition of a car porch to the right. The façade takes
a concealed form by not readily revealing the interiors. A curious, suspended box-
shaped foyer invites one inside the house. This foyer is a multifunctional space that
can be used as a sit-out space as well. The rest of the façade remains faithful to the
idea of horizontality with a screen of equally spaced metal pipes.

A combination of white color theme, wooden flooring, and subtly flowing natural
light augment the concept of simplicity within the house. The material palette is
less confusing and continues with the choice of minimal furniture. The interiors
are rid of ‘space maze’ by elimination unwanted walls, bringing in natural light
and ventilation and thereby making it energy efficient. To allow sufficient natural
light inside the house, ‘light wells’ are created by the side of the dining. This light
well along with the double layered roof provides thermal comfort to the home. The
interiors remain well lit and ventilated even without many numbers of windows
opening to the elevations.

The first floor of the house is a multifunctional space only revealed by the sight
of a staircase. The focus on horizontality made the illusion possible together
with the minimal façade and the exterior landscape that emerges along with it.

“Architecture need not be ‘brand new’ and ‘big’, but can be the simplest possible
solution for the given requirement” is the thought that led the project. Of course,
‘architecture of happiness’ or ‘happiness through architecture’ lies with the
unanimity of the design with the client’s hopes and aspirations.
