Johns in Pine Meadow

St. Johns purpose is to experience and share with others the good news of faith in Jesus Christ, because we believe Jesus Christ makes lives new. The Rev. Salin Low, Rector April 2012

Be Passionate in your faith!

Experiencing as much of Holy Week as possible reminds us how much God has done for us. Sunday, April 1 8 & 10 a.m. Palm Sunday Palms & Passion at 8 Palms & Choral Passion at 10 Wednesday, April 4 No service Please join the community on Thursday & Friday Thursday, April 5 Maundy Thursday 6:30 p.m Soup for Supper 7:30 p.m. Holy Eucharist Stripping of the Altar Thursday Night Prayer Vigil Can we watch with him one hour? Sign up in the narthex Friday, April 6 Good Friday Noon & 7:30 PM Good Friday liturgy & Hymns Can we acknowledge our part? Saturday, April 7 Easter Vigil 5:00 p.m. Readings from Old & New Testaments Remind us how God has sought us The Paschal Candle to light our way. Renewal of Baptismal Vows Sunday, April 8 8 & 10 a.m.

The schedule listed on the left is fairly daunting in lives filled with so many activities and demands. And when most of us think we are lucky to find one hour a week to be in church, the thought of even once during the week can seem completely unrealistic. However, I know that I find time to do the things I am really passionate about - activities which interest, challenge, or excite me. And Ive witnessed the same commitment to such activities from many of you. Giving the time necessary to these activities isnt always easy, especially when it means leaving other things undone, but it is usually rewarding, because it helps us to grow in some part of our lives. The Holy Week services call us to be passionate about our faith - to put aside other activities for one week in order to consider how God has reached out to us through the life and death of his son. Taking part in these services requires a level of commitment and involvement greater than any other time of the year. The reward can be a growth in our awareness of Gods presence in our lives. The Palm Sunday service at 10 am includes incredible music to accompany the readings about Jesus passionhis commitment of himself for us. The choir and Halyna have been passionate in preparing for this service. Please reward their efforts with your presence. In addition to hearing beautiful music, you can experience the story at an emotional level which has aroused passions for generations. May the passions of Holy Week and Easter enrich your life!

Easter Day
He is risen. Alleluia! He calls us to new life in Him!!!

Shopping Cards
An Easy Way to Help When you buy shopping/gift cards through St. Johns, you are making a contribution that does not cost you financially. It may take a little planning. Orders are taken the 1st and 3rd Sundays, and cards are delivered on the 2nd and 4th Sundays. Order forms are available in the narthex and can be placed in the lockbox at any time. Sale of the gift cards will all go to defray the budget deficit.

Donna Colavecchio has done a great job in getting the coupons distributed. Now you can do a great job getting the cash or coupons back to her as soon as possible. If we dont return coupons to Swells Car Wash in Winsted by March 31, we have to pay for them. We sell the coupons for $10, and $5 goes to the church. Questions? Want some coupons? Contact Donna at 379-4643 or gcolav@charter.net.

PETERS RETREAT

Thanks to those who help.

Each month a group from St. Johns coordinates and serves a meal to approximately 25 residents at Peters Retreat, an AIDS/HIV residence in Hartford. If you are a newcomer and would like to learn more about participating in this important outreach, please contact Denise Adessa, our liaison with Peters Retreat. Special thanks to Rose & Bob Osborne & Frank Hohmeister for the March meal. The Marek Family will be taking the meal on April 28th. Special thanks to Linda Snyder, Beth Coates and Gary Pontelandolfo for all their efforts in making it possible for the middle school children to participate in the Church St. Eats program at the Cathedral. Thanks to Diane Hayes and her crew for making our 13th Annual Jazz Concert a success. Thanks to Joan and Ron Caine and the cleaning crew who are keeping the church clean. Help them clean and do your part to keep our church lovely for ourselves and visitors.

Garden News Spring Clean-up Date April 29th

Well gather in the garden following the 10 AM service. Bring your rakes; wear your gardening clothes. Its time to wake up the Gill Garden for the season. Remember, many hands make work light. You could help through the summer: We could use a few more volunteers to help with weeding and watering during the summer. Each volunteer will be responsible for one week. Let us know if you are willing to help. Call the office at 379-3062.

Flash Mob Flea Market Coming Sat. May 19

We can use your treasures: Furniture * Jewelry * Bric-a-Brac We will gather all our valuables in the week preceding the sale, so keep yours ready to bring to the church. And if you can help before or during the market, contact Jill Smith (rdh71@aol.com or 3794920) or Pam Tooke (Pamela2ke@gmail.com or 379-2455). Do your part to balance the budget.

Outreach News
Our field trip to Hartford turned out to be a most joyful and beneficial experience! Rose Fichera -Eagen, Church St. Eats Program Coordinator, was very impressed and appreciative of our congregation. We will have an opportunity in September to attend an outdoor Eucharist in Bushnell Park with Salin as the Presider and to distribute sandwiches after the service. If anyone is interested in knitting together following the 8 or 10 am Sunday service once a month, please let Denise know. If you have shawls finished by April 29, please bring them in so that we can give them to the Chaplains at the hospital in time for Mother's Day. Let Denise know if you have ideas about outreach projects within our local community.

RETURN TO NEW HARTFORD DAY SEPTEMBER 16

The Hospitality Committee wants the church to be represented with a table at New Hartford Day. Judy Jones has offered to coordinate the effort with quite a bit of effort from her friends. If you are willing and able to help, contact Judy at 738-8775 or nunijones@yahoo.com.

Palm SundayApril 1st Solemn Beauty & Celebration

Procession from the Green at 9:50

Adult Acolytes Needed

The youth of the church do a good job at 10 a.m. Its also good to have a couple of adults on the rota, because they often function on a different schedule. The assignment includes carrying the cross, assisting in setting up for communion, and giving out offering plates. If you can help once or twice a quarter, please contact the office. (At 8 a.m. we combine this work with chalice bearing and can always use more help.)

Passion & Eucharist at 10 a.m.

We will have the readings and special music of the passion as the first part of the 10 a.m. service (The passion will be read in parts at the 8 a.m. service.) Moving from the palm procession to Jesus death is one of the most emotional services of the year. Come and remember what God has sacrificed for us. If you want to be part of the procession, join us on the green by 9:50.

Good Friday Offering

Supports The Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East
Every year on Good Friday, pilgrims from all over the world gather to walk along the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem. Some carry a cross, to understand better the nature of the burden that Jesus bore. Others accompany them, as witnesses, as penitents, as believers. St. Johns supports the ministries of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East through the Good Friday Offering. Place your donation in your Good Friday envelope or drop a check in the plate marked Good Friday Offering and help support this important ministry.

On February 21 we hosted our 13th Mardi Gras Jazz Concert and Ice Cream social. The bands from Regional 7 really appreciate the chance to perform. The ice cream servers enjoy sampling their product.

On February 22, in addition to our usual morning and evening services, we offered ashes outside to people who stopped by the church. People seemed excited to have this option, and we were pleased to meet a need of the world.

On March 6 a group of about 35 members of St. Johns took the socks we had collected to the cathedral in Hartford. Younger kids sorted socks; older kids helped serve lunch to street people; adults learned about the ministry from Rose Eagan. An incredible day to be sure!
