Math Performance Task - Grade 10

The document is a supplementary sheet for a mathematics assignment at Al Imam Jaafar Al Sadek High School, focusing on a word problem related to calculating electricity bills. It includes various parts that require basic understanding and advanced thinking about the cost function of electricity usage, comparing different billing plans, and considering savings from solar energy. Students are tasked with solving problems involving fixed charges, usage fees, and inequalities related to electricity consumption.

Electricity Bill Word Problem

A family receives a monthly electricity bill that includes:

 A fixed service charge of $8

 A usage fee of $0.50 per kilowatt-hour (kWh)

The cost of the electricity bill is modeled by this function: 𝑓(𝑥) = 8 + 0.5𝑥

Where:

 𝑓(𝑥) is the total electricity bill in dollars.

 𝑥 is the number of kWh used in a month.

Part A: Basic Understanding

1. What is the bill if the family uses 100 kWh?

2. What is the minimum bill if no electricity is used?
3. How many kWh can be used without going over $50?
4. How much more would the bill be if the family used 50 more kWh?

Part B: Advanced Thinking

5. If the bill was $58, how many kWh were used?

6. Write and solve an inequality to find how many kWh can be used if the family wants to
keep the bill under $75.
7. A second plan charges a $15 fixed fee and $0.40 per kWh.
a. Write the cost function for this plan.
b. At what usage level do both plans cost the same?
c. Which plan is cheaper at 200 kWh?

Part C: Green Energy Savings

8. The family installs solar panels that provide 30% of their electricity for free.
If they use 300 kWh in a month:
a. How many kWh are they billed for?
b. What is the total bill after using solar energy?
c. How much money do they save compared to paying the full amount?
