The $25,000 Goal

Achievement Idea
that can increase your personal efficiency (and the efficiency of your entire organization)

BY AT LEAST 50% WITHIN THE NEXT 30 DAYS

A few years ago, the president of a small steel company received in

his office an efficiency expert by the name of Ivy Lee. After a brief conversation, the president said to Ivy Lee: We know what we should be doing, but if you can show us a better way of getting it done Ill listen to you and pay you anything within reason you ask.

Ivy lee replied that he could give him something in 20 minutes that would increase his efficiency by at least 50% ! He then handed the executive a blank sheet of paper and told him:

1. Write down the six most important things you have to do tomorrow. (this took 3 to 4 minutes) 2. Now number those items in order of importance to you and to the company. (this took 3 to 4 minutes) 3. Now put the paper in your pocket. The first thing tomorrow morning, take it out and look at item # 1. Dont look at the others, just # 1 and start working on it. 4. If you can, stay with it until its completed. Then take on item # 2 the same way. Then # 3 and so on, until you have to quit for the day. Dont worry if you only finish one or two the others can wait. If you cant finish them all with this method, you couldnt finish them all with any other method and without some system youd probably take 10 times as long to finish them and might not have them in their order of importance. He concluded by saying Do this every working day. After youve convinced yourself of the value of this system, have your people try it. Try it as long as you like and then send me a cheque for what you think this idea is worth.

The entire interview had not taken more than 30 minutes. In just a few weeks, the story has it, the company president sent Ivy Lee a cheque for $25 000.00 with a letter saying:

the lesson was the most profitable, from my money stand point, I ever learned in my life.

It was later said that within 5 years, it was THIS IDEA that was
largely responsible for turning, what was then a little known steel company, into one of the biggest independent steel producers in the world. One IDEA. The IDEA of taking things one at a time, in their proper order of staying with one task until it is successfully completed before going to the next. In the next 30 days, try this IDEA in your life. Tonight, write on a piece of paper, the six most important things you have to do. Then number them in the order of their importance.

This simple but tremendously effective method will take all the
confusion out of your life. Youll never find yourself running around in circles wondering what to do next. Remember, to be successful you need only to live the best you can one day at a time. You need not worry for tomorrow or for the next day or for whats going to happen at the end of the month.

One day at a time, handled successfully will carry you over every hurdle.
It will solve every problem. You can relax in the happy knowledge that successful tasks make successful days, which in time builds a successful life.

This is the kind of logic No one can argue with.

It will work every time, for every person and that includes you. ************ ****** *** *
A few more time management tips:
1. Doing a lot of unnecessary tasks successfully can be pretty much a waste of time. Make certain that the tasks you take the time to do efficiently are important tasks, tasks which move you ahead steadily toward your predominant goal. Keeping busy is NOT an assurance that you are being productive.

2. Every minute count. Make good use of your time. 3. Try a news fast. Most of us spend way too much time in front of the television set. Yes, many programs are enriching and interesting but overall we easily fall in the ease of being a spectator instead of being an active force for creating the life we aspire to. Try a one day news fast. If you dare, continue for a week. I am now 8 years into my news fast & loving it. 4. What matters most, must never be at the mercy of what matters least. Steven Covey (author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) 5. Take care of the urgent but not important as soon as you can, then focus on the not urgent but important. This include working on the main goal of your life, like your business or the business you are planning to start. 6. At the end of the day, make your list of things to do for tomorrow. This way, your subconscious has the time, during your sleep, to assist you in preparing the details of your coming day. 7. Say bye bye to your # 1 enemy PROCRASTINATION . Having a list, harnesses the power of the written word. Many uninteresting tasks will more likely be accomplished simply because IT IS WRITTEN and therefore needs to be done. Youre even the one who said so.

8. When you get your mail, act on it now. If you can, pay your bills the moment you get them. Now with online banking, you can save the postage cost and you can also postpone the transfer for the exact date when the payment is due. No more late charges caused by delayed mail service. Handle papers once. Act on it, pay it, fill it or bring to recycling. Voil! 9. Always carry with you a note pad to capture the ideas produced by your mind, your intuition, your subconscious. Creating this habit of being attentive to your subconscious mind, will encourage and reinforce the flow of ideas you will benefit from. Try it, cultivate this communicative force within you.

ATTITUDE ENHANCING QUOTES ON THE VALUE OF TIME WELL SPENT:

1. We shall never have more time. We have, and always have had, all the time there is. Concentrate on something useful. Having decided to achieve something, achieve it at all cost.

2. Time is an equal opportunity employer. Success depends upon using it wisely by planning and setting priorities. Time is worth more than money, and by killing time, we are killing our chances for success. Denis Waitley 3. The successful implementation of one good idea is worth more than a thousand good ideas not acted upon. 4. If we did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves. Thomas A. Edison 5. Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. - Confucius 6. We must use time creatively and forever realize that time is always hope to do great things. - Martin Luther King, Jr. 7. The quality of a persons life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their field of endeavour. - Vince Lombardi 8. Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other one thing. - Abraham Lincoln 9. When every physical and mental resource is focused, ones power to solve a problem multiplies tremendously. - Norman Vincent Peale 10. It is only when we do our best, when we put joy, energy, enthusiasm, and zeal into our work, that we really grow; and this is the only way we can keep our highest self-respect. - Orison Swett Marden, 1908 11. Wisdom is knowing WHAT to do. Skill is knowing HOW to do it. Success is DOING IT. - Lou Finske

12. The world is full of people who are grabbing and selfseeking. So the rare individual who unselfishly tries to serve others has an enormous advantage. He or she has little competition. - Dale Carnegie 13. Excellence is not a destination but a process that must be continually improved. - Pat Riley 14. Many men fail because they quit too soon. They lose faith when the signs are against them. They do not have the courage to hold on, to keep fighting in spite of that which seems insurmountable. If more of us would strike out and ATTEMPT THE IMPOSSIBLE, we very soon would find the truth of that old saying that NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE abolish fear and you can accomplish anything you wish. - Dr. C.E. Welch of Welchs grape juice, 1922 15. When criticism is minimized and praise emphasized, the good things people do will be reinforced and the poorer things will atrophy for lack of attention. - B.F. Skinner 16. The 80-20 rule states that the average person spends 80% of his time on tasks and projects that produce 20% of his results. In other words, you should concentrate on DOING the RIGHT THINGS rather than doing things right. - Peter Drucker 17. There is nothing brilliant nor outstanding in my record, except perhaps this one thing: I do the things that I believe ought to be done and when I make up my mind to do a thing, I act. - Theodore Roosevelt --------------------------SUCCESS IS NOT A MATTER OF CHANCE, ITS A MATTER OF CHOICE.
