about "Percentages"
Share:

• Original Price: $50 -> New Price: $65 - "What percent do you
think it increased or
• Original Price: $80 -> New Price: $60 decreased?"
• Original Price: $120 -> New Price: $120
Write your answers on
the post-it note.
Key concepts:
• Absolute Change = New Value – Original Value

• Percentage Change =

• If the new value is greater, it's a percentage increase.

• If it's less, it's a percentage decrease!


Example 1a:

• A video game originally cost $40. It is now $50.

• What is the percentage increase?


o Step 1: Absolute change =
o Step 2: Find Percentage Change
Example 1a:

• A video game originally cost $40. It is now $50.

• What is the percentage increase?


o Step 1: Absolute change = $50 - $40 = $10
o Step 2: Find Percentage Change

o The price is increased by 25%


Example 1b:

• A pair of shoes was $80 and is now $60.

• What is the percentage decrease?


o Step 1: Absolute change =

Example 1b:

o Step 1: Absolute change = $80 - $60 = $20
o Step 2: Find Percentage Change

o The price decreased by 25%


Example 2:
• Increase 200 g by 16%

• Decrease 260 m by 21%


Percentage Increase:
Example 2: Original Quantity x (100%
+ 16%)
• Increase 200 g by 16%
o 232 g Percentage Decrease:
Original quantity x (100% -
20%)
• Decrease 260 m by 20%
o 208 g

1. A backpack was $100, now $120. What is the % increase?

2. A tablet was $200, now $150. What is the % decrease?

3. A pen cost $3, now $3.90. Find the absolute and percentage change.

4. A subscription service increased from $30 to $33.60. What is the %


increase?

Work in pairs.

1. A backpack was $100, now $120. What is the % increase? 20% increase

2. A tablet was $200, now $150. What is the % decrease? 25% decrease
3. A pen cost $3, now $3.90. Find the absolute and percentage change.

Absolute change = $0.90, % increase = 30%


4. A subscription service increased from $30 to $33.60. What is the % increase?
% increase = 12%
