IS 1608 is an Indian Standard that specifies the method for tensile testing of metallic materials and defines the mechanical properties that can be determined at ambient temperature. IS 1608 is identical to ISO 6892:1998 and involves straining a specimen in tension, generally to fracture, for the purpose of determining one or more mechanical properties including the maximum force, tensile strength, and total elongation. For tensile testing of metals in accordance with IS 1608, we suggest using a SATEC Series LX or KN Model Universal Testing Machine and Partner Materials Testing Software. Suitable specimen grips include wedge or side-acting models and may be mechanically or hydraulically operated. Our grips are fully front loading with easy-to-change jaw faces, which are designed for high productivity and safe operation. LX and KN Model systems are high performance load frames with high bandwidth Digital Signal Processing (DSP) based electronics and a calibrated range down to 1/500th of load cell capacity. This provided us with the ability to test down to very low loads using a single load cell. Both models feature an ergonomic working height and large testing space making it easy for operators to load and unload samples quickly and safely, ultimately increasing productivity and operator safety. We recommend reading and reviewing IS 1608 in order to fully understand the test set up, procedures, and results requirements.
