2. Variable or Falling Head Permeability Test (7Marks/S-11/S-08/3-Marks/W-11)
The falling-head test is more suitable for less permeable fine grained soils(Very fine sand& silt
with k=10-2 to 10-5 mm/sec). The basic laboratory test arrangement is shown in Figure. The soil
sample is placed inside a cylindrical mold between two porous discs. The porous disc should be
at least ten times more permeable than the soil. The sample can also be prepared in the
permeameter by pouring the soil into it and tamping it to obtain the required density. It is
essential that the sample is fully saturated. A vertical graduated stand pipe of known diameter is
fitted to the top of permeameter. The stand pipe is filled with water to the required height. The
test is started by allowing the water in the stand pipe to flow through the sample to the constant
head chamber from which it overflows and spills out. As the water flows through the soil, the
water level in the stand pipe flows. The time required for the water level to fall from a known
initial head (h1) to the final head (h2) is determined. The head is measured with references to the
level of water in the constant head chamber.
The Coefficient of Permeability is given by
Where,
a=Cross sectional area of Stand Pipe
L= length of the sample,
A=Cross sectional area of Sample
t=time required for water level to fall from
h1 to h2
h1=Initial Head, h2=Final Head

Problem 1: A falling head permeability accommodates a soil sample 6cm high and 50cm2 cross
sectional area. The permeability of sample is expected to be 1x 10-4 cm/sec. it is desired that the
head in the stand pipe should fall from 30cm to 10 cm in 40 minutes. Determine the diameter of
the stand pipe which should be used.
Given:- L= 6cm, A= 50 cm2, k= 1 x 10-4cm/sec, h1=30cm, h2=10cm,
t=40 min= 40x60 =2400sec, Diameter of Stand pipe= d =?
a = 1 x 10-4 x 50 x 2400
2.303 x 6x log10(30/10)
= 1.82 cm2
a = (π/4) d2 = 1.82
d= 1.52 cm = Diameter of Stand pipe
