Objectives:
Theme: Hobbies
• learn vocabulary words for hobbies
• learn how to ask about what one does during their free time
• ask and answer questions about one’s hobbies
• understand present continuous verbs
Warm Up
CHARADES– Introduce Vocabulary
• Teacher should pull a piece of paper with actions written on them (ride a bike, swim, run, play
baseball, read, etc…). Students should guess the action
• Have volunteers or allow each student a chance guessing the actions
Lesson
GUESS THE TOPIC – What is your hobby?/What do you do in your free time?
• Draw blanks for every letter of the topic and the students should guess the letters and try to
figure out the topic question. You may play this like hangman or by drawing pieces of a picture
following the same rules as hangman.
• Example:
What is your hobby?-> _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _?
• Explain what hobbies are and when they are pursued.
• Hobbies are activities that you enjoy doing. You do them in your free time.
• Illicit the answer with the actions from the charades game:
• I like running.
• I like swimming
• I like playing baseball.
• Inform the children that they should change the verb to it’s –ing form and practice conjugating
verbs to its present continuous form (worksheet available).
DEBATE – Should students be allowed to take up any hobby they want?
• For the teacher’s information: A poll on debate.org stated that 88% of people say yes, while
13% believe a parent should choose. Some sides state that people should pursue activities they
enjoy rather than be forced into activities while others state that a parent should decide the
most sensible activity for the child.
Activities
TIME BOMB
• For this activity, you need a countdown timer.
• Students around the table or sitting in a circle will ask and answer the topic question before
time runs around.
• Teacher should begin by asking the first student to their right the topic question and the student
should answer. That student should turn to the student to their right and ask the question and
the next student should answer. Continue until they beat the timer or time runs around and do
it again.
DICTATION
• Use the dictation worksheet included in this packet.
• Find the song “What Do You Like To Do?” by Super Simple Songs on YouTube
• You can allow the students to listen to the song before you give them the worksheet
• Go over the directions and vocabulary.
• Play the song one time at normal speed. If you can slow it down using the options on YouTube,
play it a little slow once or two more times until everyone finishes.
• Have the students sing the song at a favorable speed.
