MA 111 Algebra Tutorial 9

The document outlines a tutorial for the MA-111 Algebra course at IIT (BHU) for the even semester of 2024-25. It includes various mathematical problems related to ideals in rings, including proofs and properties of nonzero ideals, radical ideals, annihilators, and ring homomorphisms. Each problem requires justification or proof of specific algebraic properties and relationships within the context of ring theory.

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES, IIT (BHU)

EVEN SEMESTER 2024-25

MA-111:-ALGEBRA
TUTORIAL 9

1. Prove that any nonzero ideal of Z is of the form mZ for some positive integer m.

2. Let R be a commutative ring and I an ideal in R. Show that

I = {a ∈ R | an ∈ I for some positive integer n}
√ √
is an ideal in R. ( I is called the radical of I.) What is I when I = 0?

3. Let R be a ring and a ∈ R. Then show that the left annihilator of a,

I = {x ∈ R | xa = 0}

is a left ideal of R.

4. Let I be an ideal in a ring R and J an ideal in the ring I. Is J an ideal in R? Justify your answer.

5. Given any ideal I in a commutative ring R, can you always find elements a1 , a2 , . . . , an ∈ I such that

I = Ra1 + Ra2 + · · · + Ran ?

If yes, why? Justify your answer.

6. Prove or disprove:
I(J + K) = IJ + IK.

7. Let R be a ring of 2 × 2 matrices with real coefficients. Is R a simple ring? Justify your answer.

8. Let f : R → R′ be a ring homomorphism of R onto R′ . Show that:

(a) If R is commutative, then so is R′ .

(b) If R has a unity element, then so does R′ .
(c) Further, if R is an integral domain, is R′ an integral domain? Why?
