Acoustic Draft

The acoustic strategy for the architecture school focuses on sound comfort in various spaces by controlling reverberation, limiting noise transfer, and ensuring speech clarity through mass separation and absorption materials. It includes specific design goals for reverberation time and background noise levels, along with compliance with NCC acoustic standards. The strategy aims to create an effective learning environment while exceeding acoustic expectations for functionality and well-being.

ACOUSTIC STRATEGY

Acousc Design Intent

The acousc strategy for the architecture school addresses sound comfort across different
program types including studios, lecture spaces, admin zones, and informal learning areas.
The design focuses on controlling reverberaon, liming noise transfer between zones,
and ensuring speech clarity. These objecves are achieved through a combinaon of mass
separaon, absorpon materials, and zoning of services.

Zoning and Program Placement
Plan with acousc zoning (quiet vs
Noisy Zones: Stairwells, plant rooms, toilets, loading bay — placed on building perimeter
or between floor levels noisy)

Quiet Zones: Studios, lecture areas, admin pods — placed away from high traffic and buff- Secon with material build-ups be-
ered by acousc parons
tween floors
Mixed Zones: Corridors and breakout areas have absorbent finishes to dampen general
building noise Reverberaon control diagram (ceil-
ing, wall, floor treatments)

Acousc Design Goals

Reverberaon Time (RT60) in studios: < 0.6 sec

Background Noise Level (LAeq) in lecture rooms: 35–40 dB(A)

Sound Transmission Class (STC) between studios and circulaon: STC 45–50

NCC Acousc Compliance Reference

NCC Volume 1 – F5.4: Walls separang sanitary compartments must have RW ≥ 50

NCC Volume 1 – F5.6: Floor/ceiling assemblies between sole-occupancy units must achieve
RW + Ctr ≥ 50
NOISE CONTROL + MECHANICAL ISOLATION

Mechanical System Noise Control

HVAC Isolaon: VRF units mounted on an-vibraon pads; ducts lined with acousc insulaon

Plant Room Separaon: Located away from learning spaces with RW 55+ parons

Li Cores and Fire Stairs: Concrete wall separaon and gasketed door frames reduce struc-
ture-borne noise

Services Penetraon Treatments

All duct and pipe penetraons include acousc puy and resilient sealant to maintain wall RW
values

Flanking paths avoided with disconnuous stud construcon

Internal Acousc Enhancements

Lecture Rooms/ Auditorium: Acousc ceiling les + wall panels reduce echo and improve speech Diagrams/Images to Include:

Studios: Wall-mounted slat panels + carpet or mber flooring moderate fooall noise

Admin/Pods: Fabric-covered acousc panels and downlight absorpon zones An-vibraon mount detail

ACOUSTIC STRATEGY SUMMARY + MATERIALS

Summary

This acousc strategy ensures each space performs acouscally for its purpose, whether
for focused work, quiet conversaon, or dynamic presentaon. A mix of heavy mass
materials, so absorpon panels, and intelligent service placement supports the
design’s goal for clarity, comfort, and code compliance. The proposal exceeds NCC F5
and J5 acousc expectaons and supports a learning environment auned to both
funcon and well-being.
