Protect Yourself From A Hostile Dog Attack As a martial arts practitioner and coach for nearly forty years,

Coach Melvin McKenzie has used a variety of instruments to defend himself during this period of time. Years ago he began creating various techniques expressly for use in terminating future attacks from dogs attempting to harm him. After hearing of dog attack incidents, and learning about many people being harmedsometimes fatallya definitive book was born. Defend Yourself: Secrets to Protect Yourself From a Hostile Dog Attack, which explains self-defense techniques against unprovoked dog attacks began appearing on many peoples list of books to purchase. The frequency of dog attacks in this country is astonishing. Hundreds of newspaper articles and television news broadcasts across the nation report stories of dog attacks on humans. Though mail carriers are the focus of many dog attacks, peace officers, animal control staff, and people who service residential areas, including UPS and FedEx drivers, newspaper delivery people, meter readers, and pizza deliverers are not excluded. Dogs also attack people enjoying a walk, neighborhood joggers, and even defenseless children. For every dog-bite incident that is featured in the news, the public does not hear about numerous other dog attacks. Of the almost five millionnearly two percent of the American populationannual dog-bite related injuries reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 800,000 have sought medical attention. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), California has the highest number of dog bites of any other state in the United States. Understanding Dogs That Attack Dogs do not discriminate about whom they bite. You are a potential victim, regardless of your race, creed, color, religious affiliation, size, height, or weight. Even your country of origin is of no concern to a dog. All dogs of every country speak the same language: bark. In Germany, instead of being given life-saving self-defense training, postal carriers are taught how to psychoanalyze dogs through special training courses. This type of training is thought to reduce the number of canine attacks on mail carriers during the holiday seasons. According to Friedrich Buttgereit, spokesman for the German Postal Service, the courses were organized because of a significantly increased number of injuries caused by savage dogs. Mr. Buttgereit stated that in 2001, We had over 1,800 complaints by postal workers who had been bitten by pet dogs. People often see [dog attack] as a subject for jokes, but it is no laughing matter. 1 Dogs Size Any size dog, whether it is small, medium, or large, can attack people. By making this book available, Coach Melvin hopes to decrease the number of people that are injured and traumatized by a dogs attack. He hopes to do this not by teaching psychoanalysis or passive defense measures, but by putting in your hands a vital tool that teaches you how to terminate an attack quickly and effectively. Martial arts and self-defense instructors can incorporate these techniques into their teaching programs. These techniques can be presented in a class setting, and parents or teachers may purchase Defend Yourself as a supplement to students martial arts instruction.

Of course, it is practically impossible for a five-year-old child to defeat a 125-pound Rottweiler, but methods of caution that the Coach explains in this book may be instilled in the child, just as parents instill traffic safety rules or admonitions to use caution around strangers. Having the knowledge and developing the skills from this information can help to give the child an advantage over a smaller dog. Coach Melvin remembers when I was a small child, my friends and I were chased sometimes by small neighborhood dogs, and we would escape by running, dodging, hopping over a fence, or climbing up into a tree. Once, we jumped up onto the roof of a car, too high for the small dog to follow. We sat there while the dog ran around the vehicle, barking, until the owner of the vehicle came out with a broom to shoo the dog away. Helping the owner to clean his car afterwards was better than being bitten by the dog. Dogs come in many different sizes, weights, and shapes. Some are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand (Toy Poodle), and some are practically the size of a pony (Great Dane). Regardless of size, all breeds of the domestic dog are essentially identical in their anatomy. The skeleton of the domestic dog has an average of 321 bones, with variations reflecting differences in the number of bones in the tail and the presence or absence of a dewclaw, an extra digit on the paw that not all breeds have. Some dogs are friendly toward almost everyone; others possess a very aggressive, get-out-of-the-way-when-you-see-me-coming nature. To some dogs, their growl, bark, or slight advance toward you is often a move to check your response, to find out whether you will retreat or stand completely still and mentally prepare your own defenses. Some dogs are so aggressive that they will attack almost anything or anybody. If allowed to freely roam the streets, these hostile dogs mark and expand their territory and defend it with vigor and determination. Dogs, like humans, can be very temperamental and are prone to spontaneous attack. An aggressive dog will attain a feeling of superiority if it advances toward you and, upon seeing you flee, will pursue you. If the dog catches you, it may continue its aggressive behavior by mauling, biting, and ripping into your flesh until it senses that you are no longer a threat. Certain smells, sounds, or physical movements may trigger a dogs attempted attack. As dogs have little sense of logic, some of your movements, although perfectly natural to you, may trigger a dogs hostile nature, and the dog will act instinctively with hostility toward you. A vicious dog may stand at rigid attention, its eyes piercing you like an eagles eyes fixed on a rodent. There have been unfortunate and ghastly incidents in which, after attacking a person, the dog was found eating its victim. Some dogs, such as pit bull or Rottweiler, are powerfully built animals weighing up to 125 pounds. If at all possible, a person should always use some sort of weaponeven a makeshift oneagainst this size animal. If you have any doubts about your ability to win in an attack, you may be inclined to err on the side of caution and put as much distance as possible between you and the animal. Of all the fatalities from dog attacks, 24 percent of human deaths involved unrestrained dogs away from their owners property, while 58 percent of human deaths involved unrestrained dogs on their owners property. Many dog attacks reportedly are made by the pit bull, but at least twenty-five different breeds of dogs have been involved in dog bite-related fatalities in the United States. Some authorities have reported that the pit bull and Rottweiler account for over half of these deaths. However, contrary to what many may think, the pit bull does not have locking jaws, nor do its jaws possess hundreds of pounds of crushing power per square inch, according to Dr. I. Lehr Brisbin of the University of Georgia. He indicated that he is unaware of any published scientific studies that would allow any meaningful comparison to be made of the biting power of various breeds of dogs. Attacks Against U.S. Mail Carriers It is well documented that mail carriers throughout the nation are frequently the targets of dogs. In U.S. Postal Service News Release #07-015, May 16, 2007, mail carriers were reported as suffering more than 3,000 dog bites in each year from 2001 through 2006: Year 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 Bites 3,158 3,070 3,743 3,429 3,273 3,184 Because of the thousands of dog attacks against mail carriers each year, residents who disregard the safety of carriers by not containing their dogs are penalized by being required to pick up their mail at the nearest post office. Understandably, the dog cannot be completely faulted since, to the dog, the carrier appears to be an intruder to the dogs territory. If the containment of a dog is not adequate, a genuine problem results when the dog can escape and attack whatever it senses to be a threateven if that apparent threat is outside the perimeter of the dogs territory The U.S. Postal Service has partnered with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), and Center for Disease Control (CDC) to educate all American citizens about dog bite prevention. Each year, beginning the third full week of May, these groups work in unison to promote National Dog Bite Prevention Week, and teach people through video, media relations, and dissemination of literature the most effective ways to avoid dog attacks and how to protect themselves if an attack occurs. Coach Melvin says, I am convincedby the numerous postal carriers I have personally spoken with who were attacked by dog(s) and received injuries from those attacksthat the ones who survived dog attacks will live with the terrible incidents indelibly etched in their minds and the scars forever on their bodies. Fortunately, this book contains an array of techniques that carriers, and practically anyone, may effectively use in defending themselves against an unprovoked attack by a dog. Attacks Against Peace Officers The statistics regarding dog attacks cover the gamut of reported cases without deference to any particular social classes. Though incidents involving peace officers may be part of the total, no research was conducted on this group because of the fact that they are licensed to carry firearms in the administration of their duties. They also receive physical training with a police baton used

for situations such as one-handed handcuffing, arm locks, takedowns, vehicle and chair extraction, fence climbing and other uses. Thus, peace officers receive adequate self-defense training. Despite their training, however, some of the techniques shown in the book may be adapted and modified for use with the baton, giving officers additional protective measures. In lieu of using a concealed firearm against a hostile dog attack, it may behoove public protectors who are undercover officers, detectives, crime scene investigators and others, to learn some of the techniques and keep Defend Yourself available as a reference guide. Importance of Exercise With few exceptions, most people agree that exercise positively affects the overall health of a person. It gives you freedom of movement unparalleled in a less active environment. As our eyes and minds are constantly bombarded by the positive effects of exercise from magazine racks at the grocery store check-stand, billboards, radio, television, Internet ads, and mountains of junk email, I will not belabor the point here. However, the Coach urges all readers to be open to the idea that mental exercise can affect your physical exercise routine in many ways. In todays high-tech, time-crunched work world, we are constantly in a hurry from the moment we awaken until bedtime when we close our eyes. This constant stress is like water dripping on a rock; it eventually erodes the surface. Coach Melvin is the founder and Head Coach of Heavens Palm Boxing Association located in Los Angeles, California. In addition to teaching a wide variety of tactics to help individuals defend themselves from an unprovoked, vicious dog attack, he teaches the meditative art of Qigong, the health preserving internal martial art of Tai Chi Chuan, and the esoteric martial art of Baguazhang.
