Swimming
1 When I was a boy, I liked swimming very much. One year my two brothers and I spent
the summer holidays
2 with my uncle and aunt in their house by the sea. It was only twenty meters from the
water. Every day we put on
3 our swimming shorts before breakfast, ran down to the sea across the sand and
jumped in. From then until late at
4 night, we were in the sea or on the beach most of the time.
5 When our aunt rang a bell, we went back to the house for food, but we ate it in our
swimming shorts and were
6 soon back in the sea again.
7 The sea was warm , the sun shone every day, and on most days there were no waves. In
the middle of the day a
8 wind always began to blow, but it was not strong and did not make the sea rough.
9 Three times during our holiday we had strong winds. They blew the sand against our
legs when we ran down to
10 the sea, and made big waves with white tops. We were all very good swimmers. We
dived through the waves or
11 rode towards the beach on top of them until we were tired and hungry.

Movies
Everybody loves movies. We see them at cinemas, and we watch them on television.
They are popular with children and adults, too. We learn from them, or we can have a good
time watching them. They are a wonderful invention.
We also call movies motion pictures. Motion is a noun for moving. People tried
to show motion in pictures for centuries. Even prehistoric artists showed animals running in
their cave pictures.
Near the end of the nineteenth century, several Europeans and Americans tried to
make movies. No one knows who made the first one. New York city had the first movies
theatre in 1894. People put money in a small machine and looked into it at the movie. By
1900, movies were popular all over Europe and the United States. They were not very
good, but people liked them because they were new and different.
Every year people invented ways to make movies better. They invented machines to
show the pictures on a screen. Then everyone could see the motion pictures on the front
wall of a theatre instead of inside a small machine. In 1927, inventors added sound to
movies. Then they added color.
Today it costs several million dollars to make a movie. However, movie makers
collect millions of dollars from people at movie theatres because everyone loves movies.

Football or Polo?
The Wayle is a small river that cuts across the park near my
home. I like sitting by the Wayle on fine afternoons. It was warm
last Sunday, so I went and sat on the river bank as usual. Some
children were playing games on the bank and there were some
people rowing on the river. Suddenly, one of the children kicked a
ball very hard and it went towards a passing boat. Some people
on the bank called out to the man in the boat, but he did not hear
them. The ball struck him So hard that he nearly fell into the
water. I turned to look at the children, but there weren't any in
sight: they had all run away! The man laughed when he realized
what had happened. He called out to the children and threw the
ball back to the bank.

shop. It was his job to- repair bicycles and at that time he used to
work fourteen hours a day. He saved money for years and in 1938
he bought a small work-shop of his own. During the war Frank
used to make spare parts for airplanes. At that time he had two
helpers. By the end of the war, the small work-shop had become a
