Prepared by Michael H. McCoy, Historian of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity

A salute to Indiana Beta alumnus Kent Agness who has just provided to the Phi Psi
150 files digital (pdf) copies of the Chapter newsletter, The Hi-Bazoo, from 2007 to date, the latest having been just distributed via the mail. That's a total of 12, and around 10 older issues of various vintage will be added. You can view a copy of the latest issue at http://t.co/kw4p989N All 12 also can be downloaded from the Indiana Beta files at Phi Psi 150 at http://yhoo.it/mAJHj9 To view the list of Chapter archives at Phi Psi 150 to see if your Chapter is included and, if so, what is filed there, go to http://yhoo.it/HgyPIb

Princeton freshmen soon may be prohibited from joining, pledging, rushing, and
attending events of Greek organizations, according to this report: http://bit.ly/H1EV1y Phi Psi never has had a chapter at the school, but we have had a presence there as explained in the Centennial History of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, Vol. 1, pages 208-212. If someone would volunteer to transcribe that section and send it to me, we'll issue it as an Archives publication with credit for the transcriber, and distributed via Phi Psi 150 and PhiPsiArchives on Twitter. (To avoid more than one person preparing a transcription, please post on Phi Psi 150 if you're planning on doing it.)

-- Reminder: Do you know of a building on ANY U.S. college campus named for a PhiPsi? We're compiling a list on our online Forum: http://bit.ly/xihPGk Click on Phi Psi History in the General PKP folder to look at the starter list and to add your own nomination. The list will include buildings on campuses falling into three categories: where Phi Kappa Psi currently is active, where we once were active, and where we never had a chapter. Think you can help us? Thanks. ****** GRAND ARCH COUNCIL SAN ANTONIO Phi Kappa Psi Headquarters reported Monday that, "with just the early registrations in for GAC2012 we are already in the top 30 for all-time attendance!" (The early-bird registration period ended Sunday.) It sounds as if San Antonio is going to draw another large GAC crowd, the pattern starting with the Sesquicentennial GAC in Pittsburgh in 2002. Here's a photo of the back side of our GAC hotel: http://yfrog.com/oc4dzvyj You can walk anywhere along the river in San Antonio. Heres how to register, claim a hotel room, and plan your trip. http://t.co/RjAaVYRh Speaking of GACs, Monday was the 122nd anniversary of the opening of the 16th Grand Arch Council opened, on April 2, 1890, at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Chicago. Here's what it looked like: http://bit.ly/HCxDQE Here's the list of all PhiPsi Chapter and Alumni awards to be presented at the GAC. (Deadline for applying was April 2.) http://bit.ly/GBPiWY ****** POLITICS -- Among elections Tuesday is one where a Phi Psi, Rob Garagiola (NJ Gamma/Rutgers 1991), is running for a U.S. House seat representing Maryland's 6th district. The race has tightened in recent weeks. An analysis: http://politi.co/HaVAjJ -- The ties of NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Maryland Alpha 1961, to his Medford, Mass., hometown are fading but still felt, according to this New York Times report. http://nyti.ms/GByZW9 Here are shots of his Medford, Mass., hometown in an 11-slide series accompanying the article. http://nyti.ms/GBzm37 -- John W. Davis, Virginia Beta 1889 and Democratic Party candidate for U.S. President in 1924, died March 24, 1955. He carried only the South, losing to incumbent and Phi 2

Gamma Delta Calvin Coolidge as explained in more detail here. http://bit.ly/H1ALUs He also served as Ambassador to the United Kingdom under President Woodrow Wilson. http://bit.ly/fRJR8A You'll find a short political biography at http://yhoo.it/dZ0Iup You can view a 1924 campaign piece at http://bit.ly/GXehVi and a campaign button at http://bit.ly/GXeJTs ****** SPORTS -- The NCAA men's basketball tournament championship Monday night was a contest between two Phi Psi campuses -- Kansas Alpha and Kentucky Beta. (For the record, Kentucky won.) -- In the news with the tough NFL punishments of the New Orleans Saints is the question, is there a difference between rugged & dirty football? It's a question that has risen in the NFL before, including in 1955. Don Paul, California Epsilon (UCLA) 1943 and a veteran linebacker with the then-Los Angeles Rams, made a careful distinction between rugged and 'dirty ball' in a Sports Illustrated interview published Nov. 28, 1955. Excerpt: "In his own words, Paul is a 'villain', or one of the select group of defensive players who delight in harassing the opposition so incessantly that before the day is out they will prefer sentinel duty in Siberia to a Sunday afternoon of football. "It is the development of villainy, Paul thinks, that is responsible for the misconceptions about pro play that are upsetting so many people right now." Here's the rest of the story: http://bit.ly/H44okf For another Bruin and fraternity brother's memories of Paul and UCLA-USC football, check out this Nov. 29, 2009, Phi Psi 150 post: http://yhoo.it/H44fgO ****** HISTORIC MOMENTS -- A new formal Phi Kappa Psi Pledging Ceremony was adopted 21 years ago on March 24, 1991. Any memories anyone can share about the revision and how it came to be? Share here, if you will. -- Pres. Woodrow Wilson, Va Alpha (University of Virginia) 1979, asked Congress April 2, 1917, to declare war against Germany, declaring "The world must be made safe 3

for democracy." Here's one analysis of how "Wilson's War" changed the course of U.S. history. http://bit.ly/HGvWSJ You can read the entire text of his speech here: http://bit.ly/HGwyYH -- Co-founder Charles Page Thomas Moore wrote his last known letter to Phi Psis 110 yrs ago March 17. Pennsylvania Eta was chartered at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., April 2, 1860. The Chapter received Phi Kappa Psi's 14th charter; the first of three charters issued that year. -- Fallen Flag #1 (of 5 listed here): Virginia Epsilon at RandolphMacon College in Ashland received our 34th charter April 1, 1871. It became inactive in 1880. Its loss was attributed to decline in members due to lack of funds and the death of the Virginia Alpha professor at Randolph-Macon who secured the charter. -- Fallen Flag #2: Florida Beta, chartered at the University of Florida at Gainesville April 1, 1967. It was active until 1971, returned in 1977, and the inactive since 1991. -- Washington College was chartered March 28, 1806, at Washington, Pa. It later became Washington & Jefferson when the two schools merged after the Civil War. The W&J campus is the only one ever to host two Phi Psi Chapters. Pennsylvania Alpha and Pennsylvania Delta merged in 1865, taking the name of the "Mother" Chapter. -- 25 years old March 26: Indiana Eta was chartered at Indiana State University in Terre Haute on that date in 1987. -- Pennsylvania Phi was chartered 3/20/2004 at Lycoming College in Williamsport. Its history: http://bit.ly/GCUP1Y You can read our announcement of its 2004 chartering at http://yhoo.it/GCVoc5

-- Fallen Flag #3: Virginia Gamma at Hampden-Sydney College, Prince Edward, was chartered March 20, 1855; inactive 1861-1865 and since 1900. Virginia Gamma's loss was due to declining school enrollment and too many fraternities; loss recorded in our Centennial History as "felt keenly." -- Fallen Flag #4: Pennsylvania Mu at Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, was chartered March 19, 1927. The charter was revoked by Executive Council in 1934. Its loss -- the Depression was cited as "the final blow" after years of struggle -- was Phi Psi's first since 1912. The school now is named Carnegie-Mellon University. -- Fallen Flag #5: Pennsylvania Zeta was chartered at Dickinson College in Carlisle March 19, 1859, and has been inactive since 2007. It served as Grand (ruling) Chapter from 1869-1875.
