Social networking site
❖ Social media networking refers to the practice of expanding one's social and/or
professional contacts by connecting with people through social media platforms.
❖ It has become an integral part of modern communication and has significantly
influenced the way individuals and businesses interact and build relationships.
❖ Social networking is a term coined by J.S. Barless in 1950
❖ Examples of social networking sites are Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter,
TikTok, etc.
History of Social Media
❖ Samuel Morse transmitted the first electrical message via telegraph in 1844.
❖ ARPANET, the precursor to the Internet, was created in 1969.
❖ Social media began with the introduction of the World Wide Web in 1989.
❖ Six Degrees was the first recognizable social media network in 1997.
❖ Friendster was launched in 2001, popularizing Internet networking.
❖ LiveJournal and Blogger introduced blogging on the Internet in 1999.
❖ LinkedIn was launched in 2003 as a professional networking platform.
❖ MySpace became famous as a music-sharing platform in 2003.
❖ Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004.
❖ Orkut's social networking site launched in 2004
❖ Reddit and YouTube were launched in 2005.
❖ Twitter and Tumblr emerged as microblogging sites in 2006.
❖ WhatsApp chat social networking site was launched in 2009.
❖ Instagram and Pinterest began focusing on visual content in the 2010s.
❖ Snapchat introduced short-form video-sharing in 2011.
❖ Google+ entered the world of social media in 2012 but was eventually discontinued.
❖ TikTok was launched in 2016 and quickly gained popularity in the United States.

❖ Polite behavior during email, video conferencing, chatting, etc. is called netiquette.
