Precis Writing Tips

1. Understand the Passage


Read the passage carefully 2–3 times.
Identify the main theme and purpose of the text.
Look for the central idea — not every detail.

2. Highlight Key Points


Underline or note important facts, ideas, and arguments.
Ignore examples, quotations, or minor details.

3. Make a Rough Draft


Write a brief summary using only essential points.
Arrange them logically and clearly.
Avoid copying sentences from the original text.

4. Use Your Own Words


Always paraphrase. Use your own vocabulary and sentence structure.
Keep the tone and meaning the same as the original.

5. Be Brief and Precise


The precis should be about 1/3rd the length of the original passage.
Avoid unnecessary words or repetition.

6. Use Indirect Speech


Use third person and past tense.
Convert dialogues or direct quotes into reported speech.

7. Avoid Personal Opinions


A precis is not for your thoughts or judgments.
Stay neutral and objective.

8. Write a Title
