Derivation
• The word "precis" derives from the French language
• where "précis" means "precise" or "concise.“
• In English, the term "precis" refers to a concise summary or
abstract of a text.
Definitions
A precis is a concise summary of a text that captures the main
ideas, key points, and essential information in a clear and direct
manner.
There are many definitions of precis but some are considered
best illustrations:
Oxford university: Short version of speech that gives the main
points of idea.
Cambridge university: It I a short form of text which brieflygives
oly important points.
Methods of Precis Writing
1- READING
Read the complete paragraph several times to get Main idea
and Central theme of the paragraph.
Then underline the important ideas and essential points from
the text which saves a lot of time.
2- Title
Search the title of the paragraph.
Mostly it is in the first line of paragraph.
3- size
The length of the precis is one third of the paragraph.
4- Initial Draft
Roughly write the precis
Omit the words or phrase by single word
Cannot conclude anything on your own
Use past tense and third person except universal truths.
5- Own Words
• Write in your own word. No abbreviations are used.
• Write the whole precis in one paragraph.
6- Final Draft
Recheck the rough paragraph and correct the mistakes then
prepare the final draft.

• there are 3 C’s which are essential in precis are
• Clarity: easy to understand for readers and write it in easy words.
• Conciseness: write necessary things and avoid unnecessary details .
• Completeness: have all necessary and appropriate parts.
• Objectivity: ability to present or view facts uncoloured by
feelings ,opinions.
• Faithful presentation of original PASSAGE.
• Coherence: Logical attachment of one sentence to another sentence
• Sentence should be in particular sequence.
