CONCEPT DESIGN
Eastside Pride: Heirloom Series
The Heirloom Series is a collection of collages that explores
Black imagery from the 1960s and 1970s, focusing on Civil
Rights Movement activism. It highlights both the national
scope of the movement and the experiences of Black
residents on San Antonio’s Eastside.
The series celebrates the iconic afro, era-defining fashion,
and hair products, paired with vibrant patterns and nature
scenes. The mural will also incorporate historically significant
street names from the Eastside and a river design
symbolizing the past division of Black communities. "Eastside
Pride" is included to evoke local pride, unity, and cultural
identity, honoring a transformative era of change.

CONCEPT DESIGN
Heirloom Series
Eastside Pride
The Heirloom Series is a collection of collages that explores Black imagery from the
1960s and 1970s, focusing on the activism of the Civil Rights Movement. This series
highlights the national scope of the movement, with particular emphasis on San
Antonio’s Eastside, where Black residents shared in the same sentiments and
struggles for justice. This work celebrates the iconic afro hairstyle, as well as the hair
products and fashion trends that defined the era.
The collages feature vibrant patterns that enhance the composition, while slices of
nature scenes provide a dynamic contrast. These elements work together to capture
the spirit of the time – an era of activism and social change.
For the second part of the mural, which connects directly to the Eastside of San
Antonio, I have incorporated historically significant street names. These streets
played a pivotal role in the cultural and social development of the Eastside.
Additionally, I have included a water design symbolizing the river that once separated
the historically Black Eastside from the rest of the city. This river served as a dividing
line, with African Americans predominantly residing on the Eastside.
To further emphasize community pride, the phrase “Eastside Pride” is integrated into
the design. This slogan is a source of local pride for residents and serves as a rallying
cry for unity and cultural identity.
With these design elements, the mural aims to honor a transformative period of
activism, illustrating a time of profound change that the Black community can
celebrate and relate to. This piece will serve as a reminder of the strength, resilience,
and pride of the Eastside of San Antonio.
