Title of Case Study & Author: CREATIVE MEDITATIONS OF THE CITY: CONTEMPORARY PUBLIC ART AS
COMPASS OF METRO MANILA’S URBAN CONDITIONS (Tessa Maria Guazon) LOCAL

Executive Summary
o Public art is suggested in this article as a creative agency deployed to create urban imaginaries.
Artists and art collectives who use urban areas as performing grounds help to foster these alternative
views. Examples of such tactics are Alma Quinto, Mark Salvatus, and Wire Tuazon. Quinto's
modified Urban Plan/Duyan is the outcome of her collaboration with women in an informal settler
community in San Andres Bukid, Manila, whereas Salvatus' web-based Neo-Urban Planner is a
perceptive observation of the state's compulsive yet useless organizing of people and space. The
initiatives sponsored by these artists are diverse in strategies and platforms, defined by site-specific
mediations, and reflect the unequal circumstances that plague Metro Manila and its surrounding
communities.

IV. Problem Statement

o The primary issue addressed in this article is the shortage of art venues in community-based places. If
the issue is not addressed, increasing social engagement will be challenging.

V. Recommendation
o It is recommended that community interactive spaces improve socialization within community
spaces:

 Through adding art, art spaces, murals, etc. to urban community spaces
 Through the incorporation of new methods of construction and architecture, like sustainable
design
 Considering the psychological effects of such spaces (art spaces) and art itself on people.

VI. Conclusion
o Art itself in public settings are significant components in cultivating community interaction.
Incorporating these settings would aid in the development of more effective and efficient interactive
community spaces.
